Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Time of mating/progesterone etc?

I had a progesterone test on Day 8. Reading was 13.1 so was advised to mate her next day(day 9).This is early for my lines but thats what test said. Only got a slip mating though dog was interested. Now a week later my own dog has gone oiff his food and she is standing by his cage and he is definitley interested whereas a few days ago he was not bothered. My dog has been used 3 times, the stud dog I used on her, substantially more.
I am now just confused with the fact that the prog reading  came back so high a week ago. Would she not be well past now? My own boy only usually goes off his food when bitches are well in season.
We are going to try her with studdog later to see how he is with her.

morning ,

is this reading in nmol /l is so thi sis chart I use ::
0-2  nmol/L           Baseline concentrations too early to estimate ovulation
3 - 6 nmol /L        Minimum 2 days before ovulation expected however result of 3 - 4 nmol/L may persist for a week or longer before increasing. Earliest estimating breeding 4 - 6 days but could be longer (re test needed)
7 - 12 nmol/L   Minimum 1 day before ovulation. Estimated window for breeding 3 - 5 days but could be longer  ( re test recommended)
13 - 18 nmol/L   Ovulation impending or just occurred. Estimated breeding window 2 - 4 days
19 - 31 nmol/L   Ovulation recently occurred. Estimated breeding window 1 - 3 days
32 - 64 nmol/L   Ova have matured, optimal potential for fertility.  Estimated breeding window  0 - 2 days
65 - 90 nmol/L   Ova have matured but aging, decreased potential for fertility.  Breed  at once
Above 90 nmol/L    Too late

personally like a reading over 13nmol/l to time matings as at that level they are hoving around ovulation ( takes a further two days for eggs to mature and be ready for fertilisation) . With a reading of 13 nmol/l would have opted for a mating around day 12. Suspect she it towards end of fertile periods unless she hovered around ovulation for a few days. Good luck xx

Thanks Karen
Just had a text book mating at 16 days so quite strange really based on 13.1 ng a week ago

Interesting .. She may have hovered at just under ovulation levels for a few days before finally peaking to ovulation. Delighted to hear you have had a good mating ... Will keep everything crossed. Xx

Interestingly the first time I tested a bitch (difficult to mate, as wanted to dominate proceeedings and play the stud dog), my bitch had results about to ovulate for 3 days.

Had we not kept testing until she finally showed that she had done so, we may have tried too early based on average progression.
