Hi,I know there are a lot of raw feeders on here,Ive just a minor worry, here!I mainly get Marrow bones and lamb rib bones for my girls, the marrow bones are largely ignored, apart from the odd chew/slurp of the marrow, but the lamb ribs get eaten-I know they are supposed to eat them-and Jess is crunching away as we speak-is anyone else mildly worried by this?Ive never had any problems so I dont know why I am,they seem to cope fine!i suppose I just want someone to tell me its ok!

Its fine Pam especially if she is crunching them. She is doing what dogs are made to do. Btw mine love the marrow from the big bones and when their tongues arnt long enough I get the marrow out with a spoon and give to them. They love it
Hi Colliepam - my bitch has been raw fed since 6 months & gets recreational bones (big marrow bones) and also smaller 'eating' bones (eg; like the lamb ribs you mention - also chicken wings). She crunches them up & can get through them very quickly if she is hungry. Sometimes something I think is a recreational bone (which I expect to be chewed a bit and then left) gets all eaten up. Never had any problems - sometimes the poos are really really hard and have shards of sharp bone in. But it doesn't seem to cause her any problems - if I've overdone the bone I just feed a bit more veg. It's fantastic to watch her eat the bones - she's very smooth coated so you can see the jaw muscles at the back of her head working - and if she is in a bit of a frenzy it's a total body exercise to eat a bone. I think it must be fulfilling for a dog - as well as keeping their teeth clean.
Liver after bone works very well to prevent constipation, and kibble after bone is good to add bulk and ease passing!
Funny the things we know when raw feeding :)
thankyou everybody!I do feel better about it now,its just a little"what if" worry!Thankyou as well,Chris for recomending the dogs dinner to someone,in another post,as ive ordered a copy,i figure the more I read, hopefully the more confident Ill get!
Good idea about the liver and kibble, dogs a babe,I also give Orijen now and then, doing that might ease my conscience a bit,so thanks!
Ginjaninja,i agree, bones are so natural for dogs ,they love them, and must also give their muscles a workout!I really wish Id swapped to raw years ago!(despite being a bit of a wuss!)Thanks folks=Oh,can I just ask How often you give bones?Mine usually have the big marrow bones lying about, but i mean the crunch up sort?Is daily too much?Would twice a week be better?

Shards of sharp bone in faeces would seriously worry me! Just because it hasn't caused a problem so far doesn't mean it won't ever cause one--anything sharp in the digestive tract could have devastating consequences.
My other worry with bones, this time big marrow bones, is if dogs get too enthusiastic they can fracture teeth-- I knew a working cocker who was regularly given bones and she landed up fracturing several molars.
Incidentally, although bones are obviously natural for dogs to eat, it is not natural to feed them bare bones without skin and fur on them. If you watch a dog eating a rabbit, it will spend ages crunching the bones vitually to a pulp through the skin, and then swallow large chunks, sometimes even the whole animal. The bones are totally fresh, so not dried out at all, and go into the dog wrapped in furry skin.

You have a point zan but I thinkin the case of collie pam she is mainly talking about the softer bones lamb chicken etc which usually are meat covered.
