ah in a dilema ... i was feeding my Westies - chicken, carrots and some biscuits - but the trainer says they should be on raw meat as they aren't getting enough vitamins  - barf ? - we've tried it for two weeks and they are just starving all the time, desperately finish the dish and looking for more, they've moved on to raw rabbit / horse / deer etc but just spit out the boney bits  - I've checked the amounts and she says don't give them anymore - Max is only 10mths and always looking for food, Bella is more particular 18mths old. Am i doing the right thing?

You want them to have a balaced feed.  And, as it is already worked out for you in the completes, I would suggest that you opt for one of the better quality complete dry feeds.  I am not sure why you were feeding chicken, carrot and biscuits, but that is not balanced.  Although you could put chicken in with dry feed if you really feel the need.

One of the decent feeds that I saw at Cruft's was Symply.  There are many others, I just suggest this one as I hear of so many Westies with skin problems.  And I had an in depth discussion on the Symply stand at Cruft's on just that subject.  They were almost guaranteeing no skin problems.  Like all the reputable ones, you can phone for a chat.

What are you trying to achieve with the food?  How is your trainer involved?  If you want high value treats for reward based training then you can feed all sorts of interesting things as long as your dogs aren't intolerant.  Just feed pea sized amounts

A proprietary dry food (kibble) is good for convenience and will hit all their nutrition needs too at a range of prices from the fairly cheap to the gor blimey £'s

If you're interested in raw feeding it's very important to do your research first to ensure you know what comprises a balanced diet for your dogs.  I could suggest some books if you like.  I wouldn't worry too much about your dogs looking hungry on raw food - if they are getting a diet they like it's natural to be enthusiastic.  Is their weight OK, have they dropped weight in the last 2 weeks?  Remember that lb for lb you need to feed more raw food, it's at least double the weight of kibble.  However it's also dependant on their age and exercise levels and there are raw food calculators you can use to check.  Some dogs take a while to adapt to boney meals so just give them 'bone-in' mince for a while until they adapt.  Please do the research though as raw feeding isn't always the easy option and it's vital that you include offal in the right proportions.

If you want a compromise, it is possible to stick to mainly dry diet whilst adding some pet mince or bones for interest, or opt for a 50/50 balance, although I'd still add a mixture of meats not just chicken.
