Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Putting weight on raw fed adolescent

Our Std poodle pup is now 16 months, not spayed and fed raw diet but is very thin.  She's an active girl, healthy and wormed, but she definitely needs some more weight on.  I can feel her spine, ribs and hips too much, isn't emaciated but would register thin on a dog weight chart.  She eats half a chicken raw at night, fairly decent sized one, and for breakfast she has either tripe, eggs, offal or fish.  To be honest, if I offer her any more chicken she will not eat it, some nights she'd leave some anyway.  She will eat anything, and enjoys some table scraps too.

When I viewed her as a pup her mother was fine, as was her aunt, finer built poodles than we have had in the past, some lines are just much finer now than say 20 years ago.  I am reluctant to spay her just to improve her weight which I know would happen, I don't plan to spay until after two years old, maybe up to four.

Can anyone advise on putting weight on a raw fed dog?  I know she'd eat loads of pasta if I gave it to her but would prefer not to.

Thank you very much :)

Edited to say, she's not the one in my avatar, she's an older girl

It could just be that she's growing.  But I would increase the tripe a bit and add in some fats (eg; butcher offcuts, or fatty lamb chops).  I agree with you - I definitely wouldn't spay her at this age if you can avoid it.  Can you also cut down on her exercise a bit and focus on brain work?

I am not a raw feeder but perhaps she needs more variety of meat and veg and I would add some pasta or potato as well but if you have some objection to those some other sort of grain or root veg.

In truth some dogs just do stay on the thin side for longer than we'd like and at 16 months I'm not too surprised that she's a bit ribby - it's an age thing too.  I'm a raw feeder and I agree about not adding pasta - there's no real need - but it does look as if she has a few gaps in her diet

If you're willing, then keeping some kibble in her diet might be a good option.  It does help them put some weight on and it's a very nice meal when mixed with tinned oily fish such as sardines.  I keep fish 4 dogs as my back up food (usually when travelling) but I do use as a base for one fish meal a week - I add tinned sardines and fish 4 dogs salmon mousse.

I'd add some lamb or beef to her diet.  Lamb breast is great at adding weight and you can buy frozen beef chunks from some pet shops which have some added fat.  Alternatively either of these meats in mince form are pretty good.  I get mine from TPMS

Chicken is very lean so might just not be enough if this is her main meat but you could increase her fat a little by feeding the odd portion of duck or by adding a spoonful of duck or goose fat to her meal.  Check how much liver you're feeding - it's necessary, and it's great to see the bone all the way through the digestion process, but too much can make them a bit loose and won't help weight gain.

Other than that I'd suggest just watching and waiting.  How many seasons has she had?  I've noticed with a friends bitch that her willingness to eat and her ability to gain weight has just improved as she's got older and more physically mature.  She's not spayed either...

Do you feed her twice a day at the minute? If so, I would add in an extra meal at lunchtime or a recreational bone.  I have an old girl that I struggle to keep the weight on with raw feeding but I find that adding an extra meal soon builds her up.  Don't know about you but I feel that my dogs are eating constantly with raw meals and scraps!lol.
I don't know about loads of pasta but my lot get leftovers from the kids meals and tonight they had basmati rice in with their raw meat.  They usually have carbs of some sort as leftovers, not much but still get some.

Thanks everyone, she gets chicken mainly because she will eat it, she's a bit picky with other raw meat, but does get some beef, wee bit of pork but no lamb as she just seems funny with it, plays with it and tries to bury but doesn't eat it.  I know I should maybe try her with more types of meat.

When she was on three meals she naturally dropped lunchtime and prefers breakfast about 10am (yes I am a slave to her needs lol) but I do need to review what she is eating and maybe add some kibble and fish4dogs would be a choice.

She had her first season in January at 13 months, she actually seems a bit heavier then, but then she wasn't out and about as much for those four weeks as well.  She only has a couple of 5 mile walks a week, plus a smaller walk of about 20mins road walking each day with a lot of raking about at home and in the garden.

OK got to rethink a lot here, thanks :)

I also used breast of lamb to put weight on my 'ribby' GSD (he was about the same age). I also gave my whippet a small meal of pasta at lunchtime, to add some carbs. Both these worked a treat.

> no lamb as she just seems funny with it

It took mine a while to come round to the idea of eating fresh lamb breast - I do wonder if it's the smell as it's certainly a 'different' sort of scent...

I now cut it into manageable chunks and feed it by hand - one for you, one for you, one for you etc - as it seems to help them.  One of mine would go and lie on it if I fed it too large!  You could also try feeding it chilled or partially frozen as some dogs just like meaty ice pops :)

They have no trouble with minced lamb.  However to ensure that no one turns their nose up, or picks through the meat for something to leave, I now combine all my minces.  My ratio is 1 tripe, 1 minced chicken, 1 economy mince and 2 minced meat (lamb or beef).  To this I add the odd egg, some liver and veg peelings if I have them.  Combining different proteins in this way means that mine are much less likely to be faddy about what they will and won't eat.  I do feed meaty bones too but this minced meat is their usual 'base meal'.  You can re freeze pet mince too so if this would be too much for yours then you can bag it into portions and put it back in the freezer once mixed.

My pup got a bit faddy with her minces and now has decided preferences. Mixing them up sounds a fab idea!
