Hi all!This has been bothering me for a few days so I thought Id run it past people with brains(as mines not much cop!)Im having a bit of bother,my dogs are bringing up their food,soon after eating,its not every time,and not every dog,but they all do it now and then.
They are fit and well,no diarrhoea,they are fed raw mince and chicken wings.I know dogs often do this if they eat too fast(to enjoy again at leisure,!)but they dont always do this.
Im wondering,as theyve done it more often since having beef mince(all Id got left,landywoods order due today)and the "pet mince" from the butcher,which Im assured is"good stuff"-probably scraps,and bits they cant sell-(also cos Im running low),if theyre allergic to the meat,or simply dont like it but eat it because theyre hungry(and then their stomach regrets it!)
Or could I be feeding them too soon after exercise?It was 25minutes after we got in this morning,too soon?
It could be absolutely nothing,but I dont like to see Gwen especially,losing her breakfast,as shes a bit of a skinny minny as it is.Thanks in advance for any thoughts!
edited to add-there goes another one!thats two this morning and one yesterday!its got to be the food,hasnt it!
I don't have a definitive answer but here's a few possibilities:
One of my dogs is often sick if I feed his breakfast too late - it doesn't appear to be entirely related to the actual time but possibly the gap between meals, or how long he's been awake before breakfast. He will rush out and eat grass, then eat his breakfast but deliver it back within 30 minutes. He won't attempt to eat it again. I can generally solve it by asking one of my very early risers to give him a biscuit before I get up to feed them all or by giving him a biscuit at night. Bonio is pretty good
When we stay in Cornwall I buy pet mince from a nearby butcher. I discovered later that he puts all sorts in here including bits of raw pastry and bread. On one occasion both the dogs I had with me were sick within 30 minutes of eating it. I was never sure whether it was the mince, or the fact that we had exercised on the beach before breakfast and they'd taken on some salt water (tends to have a similar reaction!) However I now make sure I combine that mince with other things so even if there is a bit of left over pie in it, it's a relatively small amount overall
Spring grass causes all three of my dogs to graze with a passion. If they eat too much before a meal it sometime causes sickness
Re exercise: I try to wait an hour after exercise before feeding. As mine charge about like loonies I like them to return to a resting state before food and that needs a bit of time, although I might start the count from when they go back on lead if we have a short car ride back home or a slow walk. Incidentally I find bones are the most likely food to come back if the dog isn't relaxed enough to digest them at leisure - I always feed bones in the afternoon/evening as mine just loaf about after their evening meal :)

I suspect it's just too soon after exercise, but throwing up is the least of your worries there, all breeds can get bloat/torsion which is a killer. Try to leave at least an hour after exercise before feeding and 2 hours after eating before exercise.
Also you might try an easy to digest kibble just as an experiment, maybe all dogs don't do well on raw :-)
thankyou for the replies.I really dont want to stop raw feeding!Its only recently Ive had the problem and the two youngest have been on raw from when brought them home,and been fine,but obviously if I have to,i will.I will start to leave an hours gap after exercising,and i think I will also try the biscuit at night approach .Can raw fed dogs still get bloat?(scuse my ignorance!)and thanks again!

First pam yes raw fed dogs can still get bloat but it is less likely. Kibble can ferment in the stomach increasing the chances whereas raw meat doesnt That being dsaid I wouldnt be complacent and would take all the usual precations.
As for being sick mine do it occasionally apparently for no reason and I tend to ignore it unless it is frequent and I also watch the other end as well.
The other thing they often then do which is gross is eat it again !
In summary if its only occasional and other than that the dog is well I wouldnt worry. I try and leave a gap of an hour either side of feeding/excercise On the bloat front if the dog is very thirsty after excercise I would give small bowls of water frequently to stop the dog gulping down large amounts of air when drinking another possible cause of bloat (from bitter experience)
No I wouldn't want to stop raw feeding at this stage either BUT it is always worth looking at what protein sources suit them. For instance pork is one such that some raw owners report negatively about...
Thinking again about your butchers pet mince; does it contain a lot of lights (lung)? I know from experience that some dogs don't like these much - if one of mine can find them he gently lays the bits on the floor for someone else to eat when he's finished!! He's very careful and quite precise :) This and offal can cause tummy issues as it's quite rich
Do you combine minces? I always serve mixtures as follows : 1 tripe, 1 economy mince (a bit like butchers pet mince), 1 chicken mince (too high in bone to be fed on its own - one of mine gets very constipated), and 2 meat (either beef or lamb). They get offal added fairly regularly and bony meals too but this is my core mix. I find that each dog likes the taste and texture of the combined mince and the food is much less likely to make a return visit :)
Hopefully the biscuit will do the trick though and oh yes, from what I've read, raw fed dogs can still get bloat apparently

:-) :-) :-) Can't help smiling!
What a poser!
> What a poser!
He's what kind people might describe as an 'interesting dog' !! We love 'im, but for a very good raw eater he's oddly squeamish ...he's just run inside looking slightly horrified about the hedgehog that has appeared near the back door step. I think the long jump and less than graceful landing could be described as a
leap of faith. Such a twerp :)
~~~~ and of the other two: one I suspect was guilty of 'moving' the hedgehog out of the hedge whilst the other was
far too busy peeing for England to notice the kerfuffle
or the hedgehog. Each to his own...
heheh,i love a dog with foibles!Thankyou,dogs a babe,Id not thought of combining minces.And it funny you should mention lights,but ive had landywoods economy mince,before(heart and lung)thinking it a good part of the
"prey animal" and they always leave as much of the rubbery pink lumps as poss,and-a good test-even the cats dont pinch it!And I have noticed before when Ive bought beef and liver mince-durham foods i think-that upset the pups tum.I think I will try your combined mince.I know tripe,chunks ,or mince,and lamb mince definately dont cause problems.Its still very much a learning curve,here!Thankyou very much for your help.
Incidently,I shall find out what they put in the pet mince,though I expect it changes!My cats are partly raw fed too,but they arent impressed with it,it just sits on the plate going hard!
Aha!kitchen timers just gone off,one hour after getting home,breakfast time-fingers crossed!
all ok today,thank goodness,but landywoods let me down,my order hasnt come,woe!Too late to ring them so Ive emailed them!
