Hi, has anyone experienced their puppy/dog have a reaction to brewers yeast tablets?
I started offering my pup a tablet 4 days ago - down in one, but since then she has started vomiting now and again. Not her whole meal, mainly clear watery slime, tiny food particles. No diarrhea, normal poo's, fit and running around, not unwell at all.
I have read that some dogs have allergy to brewers yeast and just wondered if this could be the case. Not giving her one tomorrow to see if it makes a difference otherwise off to vet.
Hi what are giving Brewers Yeast for? Does your pup have a need for it or has it been recommended by your breeder?
I wouldn't give this to mine - there is quite a lot of information to suggest that it doesn't suit many dogs and I can't see any major benefits in it either. A good puppy food should be all that is needed and supplements shouldn't be necessary unless you have an issue you wish to solve. Even then you should exercise caution, particularly with young dogs, and look for products that are well supported, have good documentary evidence of efficacy and are produced by a company you trust.

I feed raw as I don't believe that there is anything better nor do I think that there is a commercial 'good puppy food'. No disrespect but each to their own.
An appropriate reply to the question would have been appreciated, thanks anyway. It would have been great if you could have shared 'the information to the fact that it does not suit many dogs', have have been feeding it to my dogs for over 30 years without a problem. Just wanted to know what sort of reaction it causes in dogs that are sensitive to it. The critisism was not warranted.

Not sure yours is either :-) The poster who replied to you offered information that others might find useful as well. I feed raw and have done for years now but don't give my dogs any supplements at all and personally don't know anyone who feeds Brewer's Yeast to their dogs for the reasons outlined above :-)

Ditto - except I give mine fish oil as they are elderly :)

It wasn't intended as such, not did I suggest a
commercial puppy food. I feed raw but don't presume that others do. Even with a raw diet I don't think that supplements are strictly necessary which is why I asked what you feed it for - as perhaps there may be other options that would be tolerated better, and that we might recommend. A quick Google gives a fair amount of information about intolerance: skin problems more commonly, but also gut issues cause by Brewers Yeast increasing gas and fermentation in the stomach. I'm sure I've also read somewhere that it might add to the risk of bloat (I think it was a link provided by someone on CD to a bloat question). Do you feed purely meat and bone or do you add grain, cereals, fruit and veg? It might be the combination of foods causing this reaction...

Welcome to the forum. :-) As someone who regularly posts on here, please believe me when I say that you may just be feeling a tad sensitive. I can say 100% that dogs a babe has never, and would never, give advice that was aimed as a criticism.
She is very helpful, and has a wealth of knowledge to pass on.

daisymae it may not be the brewers yeast as such thats causing the problem, it could purely be a coincidence that the pup started with this problem at the same time or it could be that it is a reaction to the tablet but a filler used in the make up of said tablet.
I can take many things in liquid form that I would suffer a serious reaction to in tablet form purely because of my mast cell disease that is 'reactive' to corn starch and sulphities, it gets very difficult to decipher the problem area in my experience with many eliminations with revisits about 6 wks later to see if a new form of delivery is more suitable.

My initial question was like dogs a babe in asking why would you want to feed brewers yeast? I certainly wouldn't feed it to mine without an exceptionally good reason as giving an imbalance of yeast would be asking for trouble.... it's a live body after all and something your pup will have to 'deal with' - ie get rid of....

Wow, I was recommended to feed Brewers Yeast tablets to my epileptic dog when I put him on a raw food diet. He would have been on 16 a day according to the guideleines!
