Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Food without added colourings

Hello...my male lab is 13 months old and I have recently weaned him from Burgess Supadog puppy to Burgess Superdog Adult. He has started to go a bit wild and hyperactive. No other part of his routine has changed, so I am guessing that it is the colourings in the adult food that is changing his energy levels. I spoke to the vet who confirmed this was probably the case and I was advised to change his food to something without added artificial colours.

Can anyone recommend a dry complete food without added artificial colours, flavours and preservatives please, that doesn't cost a fortune.

Thank you.

I think it's a bit of a long shot, but it won't hurt to try, at 13 months he's possibly just being a normal teenage hooligan. Have a look at James Wellbeloved or CSJ for additive free good quality kibble, I think CSJ is cheaper.

Could be that he is now 13 months old.

However I do not believe feeding high colour food either so would suggest a brand but do not believe in pushing a particular brand either but you will find loads of suggestions on the forum and would think a search for food should bring forth what you want.

Thank you...i'll have a look at those two.

I understand there could be an element of teenage behaviour in there, but he literally changed overnight as soon as I introduced the adult food (with the colourings in).

Yes I tried one of mine on the supadog adult and she went crazy on it almost straight away and she was 4 years old.
Took her off it and she was fine the next day back to normal..

I had a similar problem with a dog from rescue some years ago - he had been fed a kibble with lots of added colourings, and was completely off the wall, hyperactive and fearful.  At the time I had been researching the effects of food colourings on children with ADHD and food allergy in humans.  The research at the time (I'm no longer up to speed with it lol!) indicated a link between food colourings and hyperactivity in children.  Lamb and rice were being used to 'cleanse' the human system prior to challenging it with suspected allergens, so I put him on a lamb and rice-based kibble with no colourings and the change was remarkable, he calmed down to the extent that he was trainable, screaming and barking was much reduced and behaviour improved all round.

If you decide to cut out colourings in food, don't forget treats and biscuits may also contain them.  Good luck with your dog, hope you have many happy years together. :-)

Have a look at www.workinghprs.com  the duck and potato and salmon and potato are excellent foods at sensible price. No additives, colours etc
