Hi,
I feed raw, but have never fed pork. Today I had a spare pork escalope, so put it in a kong and popped it in the freezer for later. But I seem to remember hearing somewhere that dogs shouldn't be given raw pork?
Is it safe?
What i've found with my own dogs, my friends and my parents dogs, is that it depends on the age of the dog. My friend can't feed her dog on raw pork as they rescued him at 2 years old and found that it gave him diarrhoea. However my dogs have always had butchers bones and have never had a problem, the same as my parents dogs.

Mine has had raw lamb, chicken and beef (pre frozen) since he was 11 weeks. He's fine with all the raw meat and bones I've given him. Just worried that pork has parasites.

Also he's fine with raw turkey, fish and tripe. So doesn't have a sensitive tum.

Mine get raw pork if I can find it at a reasonable price, never had any problems with it

The pig is a host for several parasites - including roundworms & tapeworms - they encyst in the muscles and when the muscle tissue. ie the meat is eaten the secondary infective stage begins. Especially important to cook/freeze all pig products to kill the cysts.

Just searched for roundworms in pork - T.Solium can encyst in the eyes & brain in humans & cause fits/blindness as in Toxicara. Hope all these people with pet micro (not!!) pigs are cleaning up after them.

but of course the Pork you are buying will be passed 'fit for human consumption' and is checked for the presence of parasite cysts at the slaughterhouse. Teh TV series 'Kill it Cook it eat it' was very informative about the process.

I hope raw pork is ok as I have been feeding it for 11 years now!
Data mining on the internet will highlight various issues many of which are not applicable as a) where we live b) how domestic pigs are raised c) changes in how they now have to be fed d) inspection process for feeding to humans.
However, nothing in life is risk free. ;)
If you do not feel comfortable feeding it, then don't.
