- By jussy [gb] Date 29.03.12 21:06 UTC
Hi,I was in the kitchen for about ten minutes when i came into the living room the dog had been sick all over the place..He was shaking like he done something wrong so i comforted him as it wasnt his fault.then when he tried to walk he was all over the place, couldnt even put on paw in front of the other and didnt seem to know where he was, this lasted about an hour and then seemed to recover.Does anyone think he may have had a fit while i was in the kitchen?? any advice would be helpful thankyou

Have not had this experience after a dog being sick, shaking would indicate to me that something else is going on. Hopefully someone will come along who can give you more insight but I would be phoning my vet (out of hours) to find out if they should be taken in. Good luck.

My first thought wouldn't be a fit but there is no way any of us can, or should, diagnose over the internet.  If you are really worried and this seems like a serious episode, the like of which you've never seen before, then do contact your vet - if only to get some advice and make sure you have options and somewhere to go if he gets worse...

I'd certainly being staying up with him and in the meantime run though the facts ready for the vet should you need them - what was the last time he ate, has he drunk anything, has he been on his own or out of sight long enough to have got to anything he should't have eaten, does he have a history of sensitive stomach (i.e. is vomiting a common response for him), what was the vomit like (mucus and stringy/mostly food etc).

Let us know how you get on and fingers crossed it's nothing serious :)

Fits take on all guises and it is impossible to diagnosis it unless you are present at the time and witness what happens. Being sick in itself isn't something to necessarily worry about. Some dogs sick up yellow bile on a regular basis. The shaking could be down to the fact that he was sick. One of my dogs does this when he is sick and I am not sure if it is because he hates being sick and scares himself (he is a very soft lad) or because he thinks he is in trouble for doing it, even though he has never been told off for it! Either way, it passes very quickly.

I would be slightly concerned about his inability to walk properly though. If a dog spends too long 'wretching' (and not being sick) it isn't breathing properly and it can lead to the dog 'staggering' because he has not taken in enough air. Normally, distracting the dog can break the cycle and inturn, the dog will breath properly again and recovers very quickly. If this was the case, I would have thought you would have heard him wretching though.

Above all else, you need to keep calm (not easy) and try and be 'matter of fact' around him. If he senses you are worried then he is likely to become more upset. It is impossible to know what caused it but hopefully, it was a one off and he will be fine from now on :)

How is he today?

As someone else has said, doesn't strike me as a fit, from the few fits I've witnessed - admittedly mostly human! I'd be going to see vet though, for a check up. I'd also be having the dog with me 24 hours a day. If it does happen again, could you video it? Sorry, sounds a bit gruesome but when it comes to explaining to a vet what has happened previously a video of the occurrence might prove invaluable in a diagnosis.

I do hope all is well :-)

My dog has fit's, but I've never come across vomiting as being part of a seizure, although the staggering is certainly common, my first thought would have been he's eaten something he shouldn't have. Could he have gotten into any medicines ?, that would certainly explain his symptoms.
I would get him along to the vet tomorrow though.
