Topic Dog Boards / Health / Chemical castration

I am in a very awkward position as a friend is quite seriously, possibly terminally ill. She has over 10 dogs that need to be looked after, at least whilst she receives treatment. I'm taking 2 but one is a dog that she shows (I only have bitches normally.) This dog has never spent time in a pen on his own but there's none of mine I dare let his dog mate with and I currently have three in season and three more about to come in so I'm thinking about chemical castration? I obviously can' t do anything REALLY long term like full castration or rehoming him as we don't know what's going to be happen but I thought maybe chemical castration in the short term? Is it even done in the UK? How much does it cost and how long does it last?
Any help much appreciated

So sorry to here about this situation but the chemical castration takes a while to work just as true castration does, only safe way is to keep him separate.

i am sorry for your friends situation. however if it was me my girls would be priority over the male dog. i would look up pet fostering and place him there.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can give this dog that will work instantly, you'll have to keep him separate or find somewhere else he can go - perhaps breed rescue could help with fostering? Or the Cinnamon trust?

Does your friend know anyone she shows with who could take her male dog for a short time?  Alternatively I'd contact their breed rescue to discuss the situation - I'm sure they'd be willing to swing into action to help and could identify some short term foster homes for her dogs.

Sending best wishes - it's a difficult and very kind thing you are doing for your friend x

Just to add this is what the Cinnamon trust do;

"A national fostering service is provided for pets whose owners face a spell in hospital - volunteers take pets into their own homes and supply love and care in abundance until owner and pet can be reunited."

Tardak can help and their is the superlorin implants but they can require Tardak too as they increase a dogs libido and take upto 6 wks to calm him down.
