I'm about to start making some calls to a few cardiologists and was wondering on average what price is the norm for a dog to be tested for AS and the reading evaluated.

I know my own vets do this but still worried about being charged over the odds. The breed clubs don't have anything in the pipeline, so no subsidies on offer at this time.

Any recommendations also in the south east would be brilliant. I've looked at other breeds heart testing days and know that they book up so quickly and even people within that breed can't get in for testing..

Heart Testing is by stethascope with cardiologists at these shows.

I'm sure if you ring either they will be able to get you in :)
London and Home Counties venue probably gives you more room to get in and out with large dogs as the
heart testing room is off to the side to the main room where the dogs are shown and normally in the summer
the dogs are outside showing...whereas at the British you have to walk roud the ringside to get to the room
that they used for heart testing think don't quote me that it's £15 a dog...it's been 4 years since I needed dogs testing...

ECG's not normally performed at shows, but at vets.
Stethascope is normal procedure done at shows.

If you just want them ausculation tested (listening with a stethascope) get it done at a show where it will cost you around £12 - £20 per dog.  I recently had three retested this way by a cardiologist at his surgery and the cost was £76 per dog !!!  If you want one ECG'd I also had one done on the same day and it was £305. 

Now I'm confused. With AS can a check with the stethoscope be enough? What's the added bonus with an ECG?

With my breed (boxers) the stethascope check by a cardiologist IS sufficient if they score 0 or 1 which are both passes for breeding.  However, if you get a score of 2 or 3 you can then opt for the ECG to check the flow rate, which for boxers should be less than 2 mtrs per second.  I can only speak about my own breed. Other breeds may have different recommendations.

It will give ou more information on Aortic Stenosis and the recommendations given
to reduce the incidence in Boxers, I am sure the method will be the same for any breed
but the grading and what they consider clear for breeding purposes may be altered.
I'm guessing a zero in any breed will be welcomed thou.

Doppler/ECG is as good as the operator of the machinery.
But it can show if there are any abnormailities with the heart and chamber sizes etc and
the blood flow velocity through the valves of the heart.

Depends if you are looking for other abnormalities in the heart and it's function.
Troponin blood tests are used commonly to determine if there is damage to the heart muscle.
Which can be a useful diagnostic with Cardiomyopathy.

I've had a look at the main breed clubs website and it looks like most who heart test also get the ECG done on top of the stethoscope check.
It may pay to go to say your breed clubs basic testing and look to do that initally and then contemplate the ECG afterwards.

I think only if they score a 2 or higher.
Normally within Boxers it's not done if your dogs grade 0 (best - no murmur) or 1.

I've sent an email to the secretary of the London club as the venue is fairly close to me, so we'll see what he says..
