Hi All,

Nando (9 month old GSD) has become absolutely batty when visitors come into the house or even occasionally, he will jump up when we meet people who are friendly to him on walks. It is a problem that has creeped up on us to be honest and now it is a big problem I don't know how it happened but it's causing a lot of upset in the house, as he's injured my Mum a few times. He was 32kg at his last weigh in so not a small dog by any means.

I know we need to give him a cool, calm response until he has stopped jumping up. To be honest he doesn't jump up to me because that is what I've done from the start- but trying to tell my parents that is another thing. "How can I act calm when a five stone german shepherd is trying to knock me over!! blah blah blah"

What do we do about this? I'm reluctant to use a house lead as I just can't see it being practical.

I would start with putting a house line on when when visitors are expected/due. Secondly have a pot of treats by the door to hand to visitors (brief them beforehand if possible) and get them to ask him to sit and then give him a treat. I would also ask visitors not to speak to him(apart from when asking for a sit) or stoke him until they have come in and he has settled.
