Topic Dog Boards / Health / Disappearing testicle

I had my litter of pups vet checked at 8 weeks before they went to their new homes , out of the 3 boys only one was showing a definite 2 testicles .
I remember clearly it being him as he has a tail a little longer than I like at commented on it at the time saying "Well your tails a little long but at least you have 2 nuts ! "
The thing is I had a call today from his owners , they took him to the vets for his wormer and to be weighed usually by a nurse but it was a vet on , she gave him a check over and said she could only feel one testicle . She wants to see him again in 2 weeks time and was talking surgery. Now he is only 16 weeks old so have advised they wait a little longer. I would of thought if it were there at 8 weeks it will make an appearance again and could be with all the proding around .
Any views , advise is much appreciated :)

Definitely -if it has been down there is a good chance it will come down again. It could even have gone up because of the pup being nervous at the vet. Plus of course it is far too early to do anything. I have one (toy) aged 10 months and yes he will be neutered but there's no rush. I have (touchwood) only bred one Malinois who only ever dropped one, he wasn't neutered until he was 4, no problems.

I would not worry too much but would make sure you tell the owners NOT to go with the vet for surgery etc even if the vet says about it.
Maybe they can feel for it at home when he is relaxed...
I had a pup with two testicles and when taking him to the vets for a check up at about 12 weeks, a day before he was due to be exported the vet announced she can only find one! Nearly gave me a heart attack as I knew there were two and indeed checking myself, there were two and I had to show the vet where to locate both!
She then went promptly to his sister and started to feel for balls... I just said I do hope you don't find any there :)...

My advice is to stop looking till he is at least 6 months old, continued groping could do damage and they will appear or not when the time is right. Go back to the vets when the dog is about 18 months old and have the retained one removed then do not even think of using your dog at stud but just enjoy.

I would just like to add my happy story here. My 8 week old puppy only had one descended testicle when I brought him home as a potential show puppy. I took a chance on him as he was just what I wanted despite the question over his undescended testicle which I was sure would come down later.
Over the weeks and months that passed I became more and more despondent as although I could feel the second one, it remained undescended. Eventually it began to 'come and go' but never stayed down for long.  I duely entered him for his first show at 6 months and needless to say the judge went over him and advised me that she could only find one. So, I resigned myself to the fact that we had probably attended his first and last show due to this unresolved testicle problem.
Imagine my delight when at 8 months that second testicle appeared in all it's glory and has stayed put since.  My little man is complete and I am over the moon.  I would never have thought the sight of a hairy testicle would have given so much delight as this did to me!

So, I suppose the moral of the story is.... don't rush into anything, it might just turn out alright as he gets older, and I certainly would not be rushing into any surgery at this early stage.
