i have an overweight dog, i can feel his ribs through his coat has a spitz coat, he is a bit bigger than a pom but smaller than a klein spitz, according to his weight chart he should be about 11 lbs in weight he is 13lbs in weight,
he has a good half hour on lead walk at a good pace every morning, he has a 40 min off lead walk every other day usually chasing the big dogs for the ball , he has a 30 min off lead walk every night, and he does agility most weekends, how on earth can i get the weight off him, he has his food weighed out he has no treats,
the training treats we use are what he would eat in his dinner, so instead of getting dinner on the day we are training he gets it as treats when training,
and he gets at night and this is his only treat half a gravy bone,
but i am still struggling to get the weight off he has been neutered about 3 years ago he is nearly 6 what can i do, he even runs alongside the bike every couple of days but the excess weight is really worrying me any ideas please

It's fairly simple to trim down a dog, feed them less :-) If he's fat on what you feed him, cut it down, it doesn't matter how little he gets if it's too much then it needs cut down.

However, if you can feel his ribs then I wouldn't think he was overweight. Charts are just a guideline, some dogs will have more bone than others etc. I always go by the look and feel of the dog. If I can see the last couple of ribs, or feel them easily in a coated breed then that's fine :-)

Ditch the chart, they are often completely innacurate - according to the last one I saw, as a male dobe Remy should be around 35kg - at 35kg he was seriously overweight, his ideal is 31kg.

If you can feel his ribs then he's spot on :-)  I am forever checking mine, I'm a bit obsessed lol!

I wonder when feeling their ribs how hrd do you press or do you just run you fingers over the dog ?
With my very longhaird gsd you have to get through all his hair to find his body first lol

Just had this with Merlot but weekly swimming and a little extra walking plus a drastic cut in food and substituting lots of nice veg has resulted in a loss of 3 kg over 10 weeks. She is now at 54 kg and feeling much better for it.

I agree, forget about the charts, each dog is an individual! If you can feel the ribs easily with just a little bit of padding on them, then your dog is fine and doesn't need to lose weight!

I agree with the others, if you can feel but not see his ribs he is fine. As long as you can feel a little covering, but not have to dig in hard to feel the ribs. My Cavalier boy was a stocky lad and would have looked like a skeleton if I'd got him down to the top end of the breed standard.

come back from the vets today just an mot for the lot of them before the competing season starts and i asked the vet, he put his hands in his coat had a feel and said he is fine and is solid muscle under that coat of his so i am just going to keep doing what i have been all these years and he will be find and i am not going to weigh him just use my touch method.

> is solid muscle under that coat

and muscle weighs heavier than fat, so I bet he's just right!  :-)
