Hi, I would be interested in any opinions regarding getting two boy puppies from the same litter. My head says "no" but my heart says "maybe".

Your head would be right - it is possible to cope with two pups out of the same litter, but it's more than double the work, often doesn't work at all and whilst they may get on as pups they may not as adults.  Not something I'd recommend and certainly as a breeder I wouldn't sell you two boys (or other mix) from the same litter, so it would set alarm bells going off that a 'breeder' would contemplate selling you them :-(

Does not matter what sex the two pups are for every person who says they have tried and no problem there will be dozens who had a difficult time and the problems are still on going. A puppy needs and deserves your one on one attention and time, it needs to look to you for its comfort, food, attention and play to grow to its full potential.

I wouldn't advise it, go with your head. I had 2 virtually same age pups, similar breeds, 10 years back, when they were 3 years old they started fighting really badly, I would have had to rehome one if they hadn't been smallish breeds. Wait till your first puppy is a couple of years old and has got over the worst of the adolescent naughtiness before adding a 2nd one. :-)

I agree totally.However in my breed it is quite usual for breeders to keep all puppies fro the litter........ It is a small breed but even so not something I would want. There is a breeder who has 4 litter brothers who are 7 years old and she has had no problems.

i have done it and i enjoyed it and had no problem. however, i gave 100% to both pups. they each had their own time with me. then with each other.

the problems some people have is getting two pups to be company for each other, then the pups focus on each other and not on the owner. I would always advise NO. enjoy your single pup and wait until you have your dog doing everything you want it to (&more) there is pelenty of time in the future to get a second pup.

Done littermates too many times due to not having a choice (left with unsold pups -my breed is very hard to find the right homes for) and it's a nightmare, not at all fun. I would never do it by choice -I'd rather spend 24/7 at the dentist for a full week -without pain relief! Would be easier!! My latest littermates aged 16 months (had to keep THREE bitches) I have just had to split up permanently last week as they got to the age where they may start to fight between themselves and one bitch got bitten quite badly (out of the blue, no warning at all), had to see the vet, and the others will not allow her back anywhere near them again. This is a very real risk indeed for anyone with dogs of a similar age -doesn't even have to be littermates or same breed.

I have just one word of advice...........don't........... I kept both pups from my one and only litter. That was back in 2003. Even at almost 9 years old they are still very very dificult to live with, and I would never ever, do it again.

I now intend on having 5 years between one puppy and the next. Rory is now 4, so this time next year :):):)

I think when you're buying a puppy it's hard to remember how much hard work they are. (My parents say it's like kids!) and the idea of two does sound amazing, but in reality I think it'd be a living hell! As much as I love Nando I was NOT prepared for the hard work it would be and my last pup was only about five years ago. He is eight months now and to be quite honest I'm only just truly starting to feel like a dog owner and enjoy him versus managing him!
