Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Do people still give these tablets?
- By Tricolours [gb] Date 17.03.12 23:55 UTC
40 years ago when we bought our first dog an Irish Setter from a breeder, we were advised to give her Vetzme conditioning tablets which we did all her life. I was wondering do people still give them to their dogs? If anyone can remember them can they remember what they smelt like as i can't? as i would like to remember that smell as i quite liked it. :o)

smells just like those yeasty vit B tablets we took.  Can't remember what they were called, but you were always advised to take them if you were on a diet.

(Back in the olden days)  :-)

Thats what vetzymes were, wasnt it?Brewers yeast?mainly, anyway.Havnt seen them for ages, wonder if theyre still around?

Yes still very much around, my local pet shop (independant) still stocks them.

Mine still like them given half a chance :) They used to do B+E and Garlic all in one.
Haven't seen them for a while but the conditioning tablets are still here :)

Thanks colliepam.  Yes, Brewers yeast is exactly it!

I have used brewers yeast for dogs with a poor appetite, with great results :-D

Always used to keep a bottle of brewers yeast in the house as it was easier to get than Vetzyme, but now I can get it in the local petshops :-D

My father used to swear by it to keep our Pembroke Corgi in good condition - he lived to 18 and still looked fantastic, so maybe he was right?

Oh that's interesting Dill, will have to get some and try them on the Picky Princess!

Have you got a picky princess too? That's what I call Hetty! I don't remember anyone suggesting Brewers Yeast, I'll have to give it a go. :-)

I picked some up today, but of course she won't eat them...lol!

Hidden inside a piece of cheese? Cheese is the only thing Hetty has never gone off. She gets a nice big chunk of it as a reward after eating her dog food, because she's still a little skinny.

Yep, tried cheese, butter and pate then shoved them down her throat - and they're a bit chunky for that really but coated in butter it went down  :-)

What Vetzyme tablets

I used to give them to my first Lab but with knowledge about better foods and now on raw feeding twenty years on I dont see the need for them :-)

You can get yeast flakes to sprinkle on their food, it doesn't smell yeasty like  the tablets so might be more acceptable to the PP's.
The one I have is called Engevita and is a "savoury yeast condiment " made from primary inactive yeast without additives or preservatives, smells a bit cheesy, quite nice too. I got it to perk up Ben's appetite.
