- By hatemzalloum [jo] Date 14.03.12 14:23 UTC
for the first time ever I discovered ticks on my "hopefully"  2 week pregnant bitch :( I dont know how the hek did they get to her, but they did!! I removed 5 manually... now what is a safe way to get rid of those monsters once and for all?! may I use the tick and flee spray? thank you in advance

I don't use chemicals for ticks.  I remove them with a tick remover tool, then spray or wipe the area afterward with Hibiscrub (or an antiseptic if it's raised or red).

Finally I spray the dog's coat with a bit of garlic juice and rub it in.  I don't know why the garlic works but it certainly seems to, and I don't get any more ticks attaching whilst the dog is thus protected.

There was a thread recently from someone about ticks - I'll see if I can find it and add a link...

Cover the tick in vaseline or butter.  Give it 10 mins then yank it off with some tweezers.  The vaseline sufforcates it and it comes out easily.  Sometimes better if you twist slightly as you pull out.  I take ticks out constantly!!

Gross you out? My 3 yr old daughter had one in her head 2 days ago!!Yeuch! That's how I removed it and she didn't even notice what I was doing(thankfully as she is terrifed of spiders)lol.

No don't - this may encourage the tick to regurgitate it's gut contents back into your dog (or child) increasing the likelihood of infection, a real issue for Lymes.  Do have a read of the link above in which the OP provided some excellent links to studies about ticks and their habits.   I think it's few posts down from the top...

A proper tick remover is also much more efficient that tweezers (which are more likely to leave the legs or mouth parts behind) and really easy to use.

I've never had a problem getting a tick out, even a tiny one just above an eye. I think that the idea of the vaseline was to coat the tick and just leave it until it fell off, but can't see any point in using it if you are pulling the tick out anyway :) :)
