my friend is at mine with her boxer and his eye is swollen we are off the vets this afternoon with him and she has been told it is entropian not sure if i have spelt it correct, the vet is taking another look this afternoon the question is , does he have to have a  tacking operation or can the eye lashes be lazered off, and with tacking she is asking what price is she looking at for the op, she is really worried and i said i did not have a clue never had a dog needing this done so would ask on here, her boxer is not insured so she willhave to pay for the op herself the boxer is nearly 3

They will remove a sliver of skin from the eyelid of under the eye so the lashes turn out away from the eye ball.

Tacking is done on dogs that have very loose skin as pups and is a temporary treatment until the pup grows into their skin, only a matter of weeks.

Firstly, do not panic :)

Surgery to correct entropion is not uncommon. The vet will make a small incision just under the eyelid and remove a tiny amount of skin which inturn allows the eye lid to sit in the correct position. Think of it as a tuck. The cost will vary depending on the degree of interaction required eg: whether it is in both eyes, whether top and bottom lids need to be corrected etc. The dog will look like it is wearing false eyelashes for while but after the surgery heals, he will be fine.

1) the entropion may be temporary, we are talking an adult dog here yes? Not had issue before?

If the eyelids swell due to an infection, bite etc this can cause the lids to spasm and turn.

2) if it's just eyelashes, then it may not be entropion but misplaced lashes.  If it's only the odd lash they can be plucked or electrolysis used.  If it's a whole row, then again the area with them can be removed.

at any rate until the swelling (however caused) is addressed it will not be clear if there is a need to operate.

if there is then it is as Nova explained a  little slither of skin is removed to loosen the lid.  The danger is if it is removed in error or too much taken you will get the opposite issue of Ectropion (eyelids too loose drooping away from the eye).  the problem then is ti makes ti far easier for dirt etc to get between the eyelid and eye to cause problems.

If it has only just happened it sounds like he has got something in it. Fingers crossed it is something simple to put right :)

Yes entropion suddenly showing in an adult would be most unusual, it is a conformational issue of the eyelid that would be apparent during development of the puppy, usually worst in puppies when Thea are at the fleshy squishy face stage..

he has got an ingrowing eyelash which is going to be frozen off, and also he flushed the eye as he could see a bit of debris in the eye as well

Seems like a good outcome.

My bitch had a 'leaky' eye since about 6 months.  I didn't think much of it as it wasn't a lot and a quick wipe would clear it up but at 3years old she was diagnosed with entropin(Can't spell either!!).  We tried a course of ABs to see if it would clear it up but she still didn't improve so we did the op.  She looked terrible straight after the op but about a month later, she looked better than ever.  Unfortunately, that was her out of the ring and breeding program but she was far more comfortable.

That is the main concern, not attending to the problem there is likely to be damage to the eye in the end and if ulceration sets in it is difficult to heal and that can lead to the lose of sight if not an eye.
