Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Yogurt?

Is it fine to add a teaspoon of plain yogurt to her (& Boston's) supper meal everyday?

I add a teaspoon of pumpkin to her food everyday at lunch and she seems to eat
real good now for my son.
Ya back to 3 meals :-)

Well, yes, as long as the dog is not intolerant but why? If it is just to make the food more interesting I would suggest mince beef or tripe may be better or cook up any bones and meat off cuts and a spoonful of the resulting jelly would be tasty and good as far as food value goes.

Yoghurt contains useful bacteria for the gut - the dog is extremely unlikely to be intolerant of it as it doesn't contain much lactose (and in fact contains substances that help break lactose down) - unlike most other dairy products.  I feed raw and often add natural yoghurt.  If your dog has recently had a course of antibiotics it's excellent for re-populating the gut.

I did know that natural yoghurt is good following a bout of stomach upset but I am not sure of the purpose of feeding it to dogs on a regular basis except as a treat. Mine are into licking pots clean but I would not feed it as part of the diet as it seems unnecessary.

My girlies love thier weekly treat after I have been shopping of the sharing of a pot of live yoghurt. I love the way they always get thier bottom jaw messy and walk round with little yoghurt beards !!

Mine have a spoonful every morning. I make yoghurt for myself, so always have plenty which they love :) I have no evidence that it does them any good except that they never have upset tummies - maybe just coincidence or the raw diet :) :) :)

I just figure if I am feeding them mise well just add the yogurt on top of their food- that's only for the last meal :-)

If it is 'live' yogurt then it can be beneficial, I give it to my puppies a tablespoon each on their meals

Probiotic aka 'live' yogurt is good for man & beast alike :)

Was not suggesting there was anything wrong with giving yogurt it is a perfectly good food but seemed an odd choice for a dog except as a treat. Although it is a good food it is not a necessary one so in my mind falls into the extras category bit like an egg or a tin of pilchards.
- By tohme Date 12.03.12 06:22 UTC
Hmmm interesting that an egg is not thought as "necessary" or a fish not thought as "necessary" but something else evidently is?

Strange.

Especially when eggs are considered the "perfect protein" and both eggs and fish supply such great nutrition...................................

I would not consider eggs or fish as "extras" but a part of a good varied diet.

That depends on what sort of diet you feed and this thread is not about that, my comment is just an expression of personal practice, extras to me are added eggs or fish rather than yogurt and I am sure you knew that.

Natural live yoguart i have been told is a natural wormer and is part of my dogs weekly diet! i tend to put it on fruit she is not over keen on and it always gets eaten!
- By Nova Date 14.03.12 09:56 UTC
As long as you do not rely on yoghurt as a wormer alone then I can't see that is a problem, but don't forget to use a wormer as well particularly in a brood bitch or puppies.

Sometimes I add it into the supper meal- other things I use is a tsp of pumpkin, warm water.
I have even frozen yogurt & pumpkin and just gave as a treat. They all seem to really enjoy this.
Then again they also really enjoy just plain ice cubes :-)
