Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Calcium Intake of Pregnant Dogs

Hi all,

Kindly asking the threshold that we shouldn't cross in terms of calcium for pregnant dogs.
They have a higher requirement than non-pregnant bitches but then you can't go overboard, as we all know, to avoid complications post-whelping.

But then what is limit for their daily intake?

For a 60lb dog for example, how many milligrams should I consider the threshold? It's coz my pregnant girl LOVES Cerelac. I know that's a fortified food for children and has 200mg of Calcium per serving.

Thanks

I have been told not to give extra calcium during pregnancy because it can stop the bitch utilising the calcium properly, if extra calcium is given then you need to continue till the bitch has finished raising the pups then wean off.

Eclampsia caused by insufficient calcium levels post whelping can be a fatal condition if not treated properly and it can come on very quickly leading to seizures and death.

As well as the calcium rich foods I give post whelp I also have Calciboost on stand by, it is a highly concentrated source of calcium which is absorbed quickly into the system from a small dose.

You have already been giving extra calcium in the diet [I don't know Cerelac] so you need to continue now but I wouldn't over do it. If you want to know precise figures then contact your vet for advice.

Your girl hasn't got long to go now, have you got your whelping kit/area set up ready as she could go into labour up to 10 days early and this still be normal.

Yes agree, feed well but do not supplement.

I would never have recommended a human baby food for canines TBH.  I never give pregnant bitches extra calcium, I just think it is too risky.  There are many more sensible extras that you can give a bitch.  Was there a sensible reason for giving human food?

She would have been far better on puppy food.

Hi

I never replaced her puppy food. We just add some stuff since she's not as exuberant in eating.
One of her favorite stuff, aside from wet food and eggs, is Cerelac so I have used it to coax her to eat her kibble.
