Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / not eating lunch

I feed Moose her breakfast, lunch and supper 2 cups each meal.
Most of the time now she is not interested in her lunch she only wants breakfast
and supper. Is she to young to be brought down to just 2 meals a day? She will
just be 5 months on March 2. She also likes her food with some warm water added
to it, so I do this sometimes as a treat- or I add a tablespoon of Honest kitchen in
with it sometimes, which she loves.

She now weighs 56.1 pounds and stands 23" at the shoulder.

Thank you

my pup is 5.5months and put herself on 2 meals a day about a fortnight ago. She is too busy for her middle meal most of the time, but I do try to get her to have a bit of down time with a kong just so she's not totally on the go, and she has more for breakfast and dinner then previously. She is a BC :) Oh and when she has a really picky day, she gets a teaspoon of salmon oil on her dinner :)

Thanks I am planning on picking up yogurt today- just to add
variety to their meals.

My pup did this too around the same age, and she never likes her breakfast too early.  I wish I had the gene that tells us to reduce our food intake!

Mine go down to 2 meals at 6 months but during growth spurts had periods of acting like they have never been fed so increased the 2 feeds and gave a chicken wing or such at lunch time to keep them going till their evening meal.

I'll still offer her the lunch feeding- if she don't want it then I won't worry as much...

Thank you :-)

Sounds about right, just increase her last meal, and maybe the breakfast a bit, so the total is the same.

Supper meal I usual add yogurt, pumpkin, Table spoon of Honest Kitchen or warm water to their kibble.
Just to make it more interesting. She gets 2 cups and I only give the boston's 1/2 a cup and then
I leave normal kibble down in case the Boston's are still hungry
which I pick up at 9pm and she never seems to eat it.
Thanks :-)

I'd make each meals a bit SMALLER, so she will eat 3. I'd not want a deep-chested, giant breed PUPPY on an adult feeding schedule - still LOADS of growing to support and to have that supported by only 2 meals per day seems an awfull lot for the belly to cope with. I'd be worried sick about bloat, but that's just me.

Following on from my own post to try to get things in perspective.

Your pup will require APPROX 2500 cals per day at the moment = 833 cals per meal if fed THREE meals or 1250 cals per meal if fed only 2 meals per day)
Your pup when adult will require APPROX 1700 cals per day = 850 cals per meal if fed TWICE per day. The adult will be aprox TWICE the size your pup is now.
By feeding only twice per day, you pup needs to consume nearly an ENTIRE DAYS adult ration in ONE meal  (or another way of looking at it - pup needs to eat a larger meal than an adult that is twice it's size - that is a lot of food to cram in a little belly)

Compare this to say a Daschund that will require approx 500 cals as a pup and 450 as an adult, the pup if only fed 2 meals per day will only be consuming almost HALF of an adults ration per meal, a big difference to a giant breed pup on only 2 meals.

The adult size of a pup will effect the calorie requirement eg. a 5kg pup that will end up as 10kg as an adult will not require as many calories as a 5kg pup that will end up as a 40kg adult.

All figures are approx using this calculator and putting the adult weight at 50kg. You pup may need much less than 2500 cals per day, these figures are to demonstrate the difference in nutrional demands of a growing giant breed, compared to smaller breeds. Feeding giant breeds IS NOT THE SAME as feeding smaller breeds.

Lucky you Multitask, my puppy insists on breakfast the second she wakes up, and you know about it if you don't comply! Hubby is away at the mo so dogs are upstairs with me, and the second the alarm goes off I have a puppy bouncing on my head saying I need to get up! :-) I strongly suspect 3 out of my 4 dogs would happily eat 3 or 4 times a day if I let them.....

I offer her 2 cups at each meal, plus the boston's food is down.

Ex: this morning I gave her 2 cups and well she didn't even finish it, the boston's food is down as well.
I pick these all up a half hour later but she never goes back to eat. Reason for the half is because I am getting reay
for work.
At dinner time my son does the same thing.
Supper time I always add something to the food be it yogurt, honest kitchen or just warm water.

In all I def can't make her eat more then she will eat. But the food is still offered- if she is still hungry there is def
food for her to eat. They usual get some apple, orange ect as well. So they always getting a lil something else.
Yesterday with supper I gave some corn and carrots which they loved.

I also set aside about 15 min about an hour after she eats and we do some training which I use about a handful
of CaniSource.

Our Sadie refused lunch and then suppers when she was about 6 months,I just increased breakfast and tea, when older though she would of eaten all day long if given lol

I am thinking maybe its because she is losing teeth- not sure. She only ate about half a cup at lunch time yesterday.
She does eat her breakfast & supper real good. Hubby figures its because I am not the one feeding her and its my son.

I totally agree with Mastifflover about the amount of food. Moose should eat 3 times a day or she could end up with bloat. Larger breeds especially are prone to joint and bone problems, so it is always advisable to keep the puppies growth rate slow so that the bones aren't being overloaded at a young age. What food do you feed Moose on???

Now tell me how I force her to eat her lunch meal when she does not want it?

I put her lunch down yesterday, left it down for about a half cause Junior nibbles and she didn't want it. Then I
offered the same bowl at supper which she ate good. I have even offered a little more food at each meal, but seems
to be to much cause then she does not eat it all.

Yes they all have their own bowls :-)

She is on Back to basics & Taste of the wild. I offer different food at each meal. Once Back to Basics is done they will
be eating Addiction. I have done this with all my dogs and they love this. The main bag that never changes is my Taste of The wild,
the only thing that may change in that is I may buy fish, chicken or Venison.

I also have CaniSouce which I use as a training treat- usually on Saturday or Sunday they will get it for a supper meal.

My vet said she is a good weight and not to worry about it- if she doesn't want to eat she will when she is hungry.
After reading the posts on here I was all worried cause she doesn't want her lunch meal- sometimes she will eat a half
a cup or a whole cup and that's about it.

Offering less food per meal would be more likely to get her interested in the middle meal.

It seems as if she is not a greedy pig and only eating what she needs. You know what she needs per day (the total she IS eating over the 2 meals), if you want her to have 3 meals, split that total between 3 meals.
- By dollface Date 04.03.12 20:14 UTC
Ok I will try that then :-)

If that doesn't work I'll see if my son can add warm water to her food and offer it to her- she seems
to eat that up like I have not fed her lol
- By mastifflover Date 04.03.12 22:19 UTC
Buster food is fed soaked. I add warm water, then leave it to soak for 20 mins. This way, the food soaks up the water and has swollen before it reaches the dogs belly. It's another thing that some suggest helps with the prevention of bloat.
I also find that Buster doesn't have such a large drink of water after eating soaked food, so another + point for the anti-bloat measures :)

I found if I mix her food with pumpkin she ate really good for my son at lunch time- he said she ate it all up. :-) Good News!!
I decided to do that for her lunch meals then I no she is eating for him.

Is it okay to mix plain yogurt with their supper meals? They all seem to really enjoy this.

The breakfast meal she either has hard kibble or it is soaked if she doesn't want to eat, but she usually eats real good at breakfast.

The plain yogurt is fine?
