> is that just because they were coming from the US?
No that's because they come in Cargo and the Authorities at the airport charge for handling and checking paperwork, that's on top of the Cargo charge.
This is why I flew out from Heathrow but flew back to Brussels and got hubby and a friend to drive out and get us, as even with Ferry and Fuel for a 4x4 it was cheaper than to bring her back as Cargo, as we were going bothy ways.
On the other hand it would not have worked out cheaper for my friend to fly out and bring back her pup this way as ti was a one way trip,a and Cargo plus Import charges came to less than person return fare, two charges for the dog plus ferry and fuel.
It really needs totting up case by case, and with Ireland it may still work out cheaper to fly pup in as Cargo to Ireland direct, as I don't think you have a direct ferry route with the continent that is an approved pet entry route.
Also maybe the Irish authorities aren't as expensive as Heathrow are.
So your first check with Irish authorities whether there are any air routes allowing dogs into Ireland, then check with the airlines that cover that airport, and which fly between there and the Norwegian Airport nearest pup direct. You want to avoid stop overs with an unaccompanied dog if at all possible.
