Looking for some help. My 20 month old bitch but her pad a few weeks ago...i kept her in for a week until it healed a bit and she went a few walks after that but for the last 2 weeks she doesnt want to go out walking. The pad is now pretty much healed, can just see a little scar.
I find it funny because i took her into the car the other day and drove to the woods where she ran around for an hour and half no problem but doesnt want to go out when leaving from the house. She still eats no problem, chews her bone and plays with the other dog so doesnt seem ill at all.

Any help is appreciated as im beginning to get worried now.

Could it be that pavements are still too hard but running on grass etc is fine.

Could something eg grit have healed inside the wound again making it painful to walk on.

After 2 weeks I would be asking the vet to have a look at that pad.

Good point. A friend had a similar experience with her dog. It proved to be an abcess that had formed inside the pad. They didn't know how it happened but the vet guessed that it might be due to friction, or a cut that had healed with some kind of infection inside, perhaps due to a bit of grit. Her dog had to be anaesthetised, pad cleaned out, stitches, antibiotics and a Comfy Collar for a week.

Hope all goes well with your bitch Arnie.

Hi Arnie, one of my dogs sliced part of his pad off flushing duck in the river and whatever it was also sliced between his toes. I walked him only on grass for over three months after that to give the new pad time to toughen up.

I ran barefoot over broken glass in an accident several years ago and although A&E were convinced the wound was cleaned of any glass, I knew a piece was still there because I could feel it slicing tissue for years after if I put pressure on it through walking. It took three years for the glass to finally work its way out. I soaked it in epsom salts and ended up in surgery to remove an arrowhead shaped piece the size of a fingernail. It never showed up in the xray taken at the time of the accident.
