Brooke was mated 3 times and her pups were due Tuesday, Wednesday or today. Her temperature has been 98 - 97 for the last 3 days and she started panting last night. Up all last night with her and today had her checked by the vet who said the cervix was partially open. She is still panting and very restless. Licking alot, hasn't eaten for 24 hrs, and digging like mad.
She has this morning been bringing up yellow forthy liquid but the vet wasn't worried, she has carried on doing this all day today, never had a bitch do this before. Is it because she hasn't eaten do you think?
When scanned it was thought she had about 10 pups and she is enormous!!!
I know everything is probably fine but can't help worrying and don't know how many times I've said today NEVER AGAIN!
How long should I leave it before going back to the vets? I thought if nothing had got any futher tomorrow I'd go back in the morning.
Her mother always took ages to actually get on to the second stage of labour but then popped them out.

Hi Nicolla, Vets normally say the first stage of labour can last as long as 36 hours in certain breeds. In my breed (wolfhounds) they normally go about 24 hours for the first stage of labour. Once the bitch has started having contractions, if nothing has happened after about 11/2hours thats when I contact the vet. He ususally says that it can be left up to three hours between pups, before he wants to see them Hope this helps a bit.

Hi Nicola,
You say she had 3 matings she may not of taken on the first mating,
so remember they can go 6 days over.
I fshe is stressted in any way take her up the vets again and let him check again as if she is half dialated it should be soon.
But if nithing happens she may have a blockage in her birth canal like a pup sideways for instance.
The reason i say this is because my Siberian Husky had her pups 3 days ago, she went 6 days over was nesting for 24 hours before given birth, her waters brook at 1.10 pm and she tried to deliver the first born at 2.10 unfortunately he was breach so we had to put our fingers in and turn the pup around and then pull him out very slowly. 6 houes later still no pups were born but she was pushing and nothing was happening, so we took her to the vets and he said her birth canal was clear and wanted to do a ceserain, lucky he did as the next pup was laying across the birth canal if we had left her a couple of hours longer we would have lost her and the pups.
But now we have a healthy mum and 2 boys and 3 girls..
I am still waiting for my Alaskan Malamute to give birth as she is noe 4 days over thats proving she took on her first maiting so it's puppies
everywhere.lol.
Best of luck and let us know how she goes Leah from polarpaws

My first ever litter of goldens was very long winded the bitch started nesting on the saturday morning and I didn't get the first pup until sunday afternoon after 2hrs and 10mins pushing, I nearly phoned thevet at 2hrs but after checking the pups posture it turned out the pup had a paw over its head so was a little stuck and after a little gentle manipulating it was born she then went on to have a total of 9 pups....
Good luck xxxxxxxxx

What breed is she?
One of my Bull Terriers had a litter of 10, she was only a day over but in distress. I ended up taking her to the Vets and asking for a c-section, no demanding her to be c-sectioned.
I lost 4 puppies, her uterus was apparantley so streched by the amount of puppies she was carrying that she couldnt have strong enough contractions to push a puppy out. After doing the c-section the Vet agreed that we had done theright thing.
In our breed we don't leave a bitch more than two days over her due date as we are usually asking for problems by doing so.
If you feel she is in distress ask to see a different Vet. Your Vet could administer an injection to help labour along.

my bitches last litter started on the right day but we lost 3 huge dead pups, it wasnt nice to see perfect full term pups lying there dead, awful for the bitch too, she had a terrible time trying to get them down-2 of which needed trips to the vets to unblock them, there should of been 7 but we came away with 4,---this time i decided to have an elective ceasar, again she had big pups and 7 in total, all alive and well, i have to say in all honesty she had a much easier time and was soon back on form, -i picked her up from the vets, she came out wagging her tail, brought her and the pups home, she fed them all, cleaned them up, took herself out for a pee, then ate a good meal , nothing at all like the state of her after her last lot, so im pleased i made the choice i did,!! everything deserves the best chance you can give it, :D

Brooke is a labrador.
Glad to say she started to push at 5 pm last night and the first pup appeared at 5.14pm! Took 5 hours in all.
She has produced 5 black bitches, a black dog and a yellow dog. Glad I waited as I was thinking of taking the c-section.
Mum and pups are all doing well, although last night after having the pups she wanted to be cuddled and there was no way she was going to get back in the whelping box. Dozed off and woke at 3 am and found mum and pups cuddled up together.

Hi Melody,
No news yet, but Nikita has been very restless all night again and is now starting to nest, so it should be either tonight or in the morning.
Pebbles and her pups are doing fine they are 4 days old now and you wouldnt think she had a ceserian only 4 days ago.
I need a bow of match sticks for my eyes to keep them open arggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!very sleepy only got 1 hours sleep last night between us.
As soon as something happens i will let you know.
Leah

Good luck Leah ..to both of you :) Try and get some shut eye this evening ..sounds like you may need it ;)

awww! Nicolla, I am so happy for you that all is well.
I am curious...there was a yellow dog, so was the sire a yellow or a chocolate? Or does Brooke have yellow genes... ?

Brookes sire was yellow, so she was from a black / yellow litter. Her mother was black carrying all three colours. I used a chocolate dog on her because he comes from a safe line so hoped not to get any bad genes. It worked, all the litter are fine. The yellow dog will probably have liver pigment which I hate and would not normally want in a litter but I had other reasons to do this mating.
I would love a yellow dog but this one is going to a pet home who already has one of my dogs from another litter so will be loved whatever colour his pigment.

Hi Everyone,
Just yo you let you know Nikita had 4 lovely girls on the 5th 8 days old now. I have been so busy i haven't had a chance to get on the net and tell you all.
We had 2 black and white girls and one red and white girl and a grey and white girl. What a mixture, all doing fine apart from Nikita she seems to get so stressed she has me up all night everynight painting and moaning then pacing if i didnt know better i would say she had'nt had the pups yet but that is just the way she is. She will be ok next week.
Leah x
