As i was spending an extortionate amount on fuel again todayI pondered the question that has mystified many people I am sure. Why with Diesel costing nearly £1.50 per litre is it still priced in fractions of a penny? Totally needless as far as I can see. the .1 of a penny probably doesn't cover the fumes in the tank.

Cos they think we buyers might just think its cheaper that way!! Same as something costing 99pence instead of £1 or £9.99 instead of £10 etc.....

I do sometimes wonder what world our betters live in - heard a member of parliament today explaining that they had reduced the amount of tax paid on fuel, well yes they did, by 1 pence at the same time as they increased the VAT by about 5 pence, silly me I make that a 4 pence increase in tax, just shows how wrong I can be.

The thing about buying fuel that annoys me is that we buy it by the litre but cars measure it by the gallon so it makes it harder to work out just how much each mile is costing and whether the alleged mpg is anything like what I actually get.  I was surprised when I bought the car I currently have that it doesn't tell you the fuel economy when you are driving.  My previous one would tell me and I could adjust my driving style accordingly.  I suspect that with my current one it is because it gets so few miles to the gallon!

That's is why I convert my MPG to MPL, most mobile phoens have converters.

I work on our Disco doing 6.5miles per litre.

4.5l per gallon, it's not too hard to work out if your brain works (mine doesn't so it took me a while :-P).

Mine gets 42mpg - usual for mine (1.9l berlingo, 2001) is 40mpg.  I was quite surprised by that as it seems to burn through the stuff like paper!

Mind you, mine's getting 0mpg at the moment as it's died a horrible death, just waiting for the garage to come and collect to diagnose but it may well be terminal.

If it is I'll be on the lookout for something similar sized with same or better mpg (if there is such a thing).
