Could someone please clarify a point about variety classes for me please.

Today at an open show my breed classes clashed with the any variety special yearling variety class which I had also entered my boy into.
He got 1st in his breed class(junior) and the judge was waiting for us to go into the variety class.
I thanked him for waiting but withdrew my dog as he had not challenged for best of breed yet and as this was imminent I didn't want to run the risk of him being beaten in the variety class thus preventing him from entering best of breed.

Now this is where I'm confused as others told me that as there were no more toydogs in the variety class then it didn't matter if he was beaten. I always assumed he couldn't be beaten by any dog ,irrelevant of breed or group,to be able to go into best of breed. so which is right?

He finished RBOB

Hope you can help me out

If you had competed and been beaten in the variety class, you could still have challenged for Best of Breed in your breed but would have been unable to go on to the group.
Varieties are not normally judged until after the breed judging is complete so seems a strange way of doing it to be running both classes at the same time.

You could have competed in the variety class and BOB but not gone any further if beaten in the variety class.

If the show was judged on a group system and you were an unbeaten toy you could go into the toy group but if you had not remained unbeaten by other dogs  you could not then go into BIS even if you won the group as you would be a beaten dog. Well I think this is the situation although I have never tested it.

It would be considered to enter a challenge or the group knowing you could not enter the BIS ring as this is not fair on others in your breed as you have taken away their chance to compete for the award.

Thanks everyone, I knew you would have the answer!!

So it looks like I was perhaps right to withdraw from the variety class as If my boy had won BOB then I would not have felt right going into the group thinking I could not go any further . I only entered the variety class as in the past they have always been after the breeds and so then you know what your situation is. I learn something new everyday thanks to the kind people on this forum

Many champ shows schedule classes such as rare breeds which often take place before (or at the same time) the breed classes!
