Topic Dog Boards / General / Dogs - Highly Flammable!!!
- By suejaw Date 07.02.12 19:32 UTC
No I haven't set fire to my dogs, nor do I intend to..

I came across something today which worries me somewhat..

Putting all the swept up dog fur in the fireplace.. Set fire to said dog fur(A lot and mainly Bernese fur too) and it burnt through the lot within seconds   I only hope to god my dogs never get caught up in any fire as they would burn rapidly...:-(

Never believed that they were flame retardant, just didn't think they they would be this highly flammable!!!

Having seen the scorch marks on a tail of a long haired dog (not one of mine) that got too close to a fire, and having seen how the hair from my own dogs burn when I put it on the fire, I can only assume that the dead hair burns quicker due to the fact that it doesn't have the wet oils on it that is on a healthy 'live' coat.

So I think you can rest a bit easier. At least I hope you can.

I always remember my Granddad's GSD, Shane burning his tail on the Calor gas fire. They used to have it in the living room as it was a really small room, and being old fashioned only used the 'sitting room' for special occasions I.E Christmas. We'd smell burning long before any of his tail-hair was singed. Shane was none-the-wiser to it either way! He would never ever learn to keep away and despite putting a fire-guard in front of it, he'd still manage to get his tail through it some how.

Remember your fire training triangle :)  Heat, fuel, oxygen.
On the dog the fibres will generally be considerably more closely placed and therefore there will not be the same quantity of oxygen freely available between them so not quite as flammable.

lol.. And years ago I used to be a fire warden and attended many courses... Clearly slipped my mind.. ;-)

I used to put brushed out dog hair on the fire too and got a telling off from my chimney sweep, apparently it deposits flammable deposits in your flue.

And it really stinks when I've thrown it onto the fire!
