Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Walking after food

I've always fed my dogs after they've had their tea time road walk but now they're starting to pull home on the return trip like steam trains. Something they didn't do until we had our youngest.

Now I'm thinking about giving them their tea first but I'm worried how long I should leave them after they've eaten before I can walk them out.

Does anyone know when it would be ok?

My back can't take the strain even with Gencon halters!

At least an hour after eating.

Here is a link on bloat/GDV that will give a little more info. Some breeds/types are at greater risk form bloat, but any breed/type can get it, so it's always best to be aware of the signs.

I was going to say an absolute minimum of 30 mins but would reccomend nearer an hour, for the reason of bloat(as previous poster states)

I have an absolute minimum of 1 hour for even the lightest of road walks but if we are heading into the fields (which is more usual) I leave it for 1.5 hours minimum but prefer 2 hours.

Bloat is a concern but it's also for other reasons: I don't like them swimming on a full stomach (several of my regular walks include a slosh about!), and it works with their guts better - they are ready for a pooh!  Two of my dogs will pooh at least twice on walk, and don't go in the garden, so it makes sense for me to give them the right sort of walk at the right time :)

I have a (terrible) technique for the steam train effect on the way home.  One of mine has to be washed after every walk (allergies), the other two also get filthy so all three get a cold hose and a Hibiscrub wash when we get back.  As we get closer to home they resemble small boys being taken to the dentist, and then have a very polite exchange at the gate...

"After you", "No, after you", "No I insist, after you"  "No really it's OK, I'll wait"    ...    :)

I would always wait a minimum of an hour after a walk to feed, so if you have been feeding as soon as they get home, stop and I doubt they will be so keen to drag you home, as they won't be expecting to be fed for some time.

As for how long after a meal I take mine out after several hours.
