Topic Dog Boards / Health / What is a good poo?! (sorry disgusting subject!)
- By streetmutt [gb] Date 02.02.12 14:57 UTC
I have recently changed my dogs over to Vitalin sensitive which they have with some naturediet after having problems with loose stools and white bits throughout (previous post on this). Anyway they are doing very well, I know it's not the best food out there but it seems to suit them and I now have the complete opposite with their stools! I have never known such hard poos! Everyone going ok, the stools now are hard round balls and when I go to pick them up they are dry and crumbly in texture, also some are fairly white, I know naturediet has some ground bone in it. The Vitalin is 33% lamb meat meal and naturediet about 60% I think. Is this a sign of a good stool? Definitely alot better than the Mr Whippys I had before! Just wondered if this is how they should be. Sorry for the gross topic!

I think the general idea of a "good" poo is one that is firm and kickable and the you could pick up easily with your hands (not going to try the last one )

For my dogs own comfort I don't want very hard poo as one of my dogs is apt to get a bit constipated.  If it turns white quite quickly it also suggests that their diet is high in bone which again isn't too desirable either.  I raw feed and aim for a diet which produces firm poo (easy to pick up in one piece using a poo bag or solid enough to roll or kick without spreading or crumbling).

to me a good poo is one that comes out without effort! and stands upright when you hold it up, if like a ball the do has prob had diff getting it out and would have been painful. think of yourself when imagining this one!

Thank you for all your replys, think I made need to change something so they are not so hard as they would definitely 'dong' on a shovel! Also when picking up in poo bags, you could get more than one in (sticking one to another as you go along but these I can't as they just crumble! So we've gone from mr Whippys to golf balls! My search for the perfect one will continue.......!
