Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Now at 4 months, does this sound right?
- By dollface Date 01.02.12 18:31 UTC
Schedule feeding seems to be going ok, she eats it all up no prob- still all new to me with this. Especially trying to feed the bostons
so they have their food cause they are so use to free fed, so being a chore that's for sure.

Are my boston's to old to schedule feed being 11 yrs and 12 yrs? Would 1 cup twice a day be good for them- lets say morning and night?
Not sure if they would dig into it like she does

Moose is 4 months tomorrow I give her 1 1/2 cups 4 times a day = 6 cups in all- does that sound to much or not enough?
Also at what age should I put her down to 3 times a day?
According to the bag this is what it says for age and weight- Last at the vet she weighed 37 pounds
Taste of The Wild: http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/products/puppies/dry_food/high_prairie_puppy_formula/
She is on the adult kind http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/products/dogs/dry_food/high_prairie_canine_formula/

Now to go buy 2 new bowls for Moose since these ones only hold 2 cups at a time and she is going to be eating
much more then that at a sitting lol

Lest say with 2 big dogs how long does a 30 lbs bag last you?

With my 5 x 40 pound dogs, a 15kg (33lb) bag last them two weeks.

On the other hand it wouldn't' l;last as long with my friends Border collies who are similar size.

I would certainly think two cups (assuming that is 100g or 3 1/2 oz per cup) of food each too much for the Bostons.

I can't see why you could not feed the Bostons the same as the puppy, as 4 times a day would be plenty enough even if they have been used to free feeding.

Once they are used to it you can drop of feeds as you do for pup until they are on two meals a day.

By 3 months old my pups are down to 3 meals per day so 4 meals at 4 months seems alot.

Not all kibble weighs the same, a teacup of one will weigh more than a teacup of another, I get a clear plastic glass and weigh the food out I am currently using aiming for the middle of the recommended amount for weight of dog and put a line on the glass in permanent marker along with the weight and which brand so you don't inadvertently use the wrong one.

When they get to 10-12 months old they go on to adult and are free fed.

The OPs dog is great dane x (sorry, I forget what the other breed is, but it is a large one). 4 meals per day for a 4 month old giant breed is not over the top atall.
As adults it is recomended to feed them at least twice per day, so this pup is only having 2 meals more than a fully grown adult would, but with a HUGE amount of growth left to do.

ETA some giant breeds will still be on 3 meals per day up to about 12 months (& they still have plenty of growing to do)

This depends on her. If she is leaving some food or seems a little less interested in a meal you could try cutting one out, but don't fret over it. Buster was still on 4 meals per day up to about 5 or 6 months old. When he wasn't going at each meal with such gusto I dropped down to 3 meals.

What does she feel like? If she is a bit too plump (not easy to feel her ribs) then cut it down a little. If she is too skinny  then you can increase the amount a little bit.

I did the 4 meals a day yesterday and the last meal at 9pm not interested in at all- so am going to try 2 cups
3 times a day today.
She had her breakfast and ate good and the boston's had a cup this morning and ate good- but I also added a spoonful
of wet food in theirs. The boston's never seem to eat through out the day at all, but will offer them some at dinner time
when I feed Moose and if they are hungry all is fine that way.

Nope they are all a good weight- have a waist line- can feel the ribs ect. def will keep an eye on their weight and
over all condition so I no if I should add or drop a few lol
Def a lot to learn but have also e-mailed my breeder and asked some questions and she to a great help.

Thank you all so much :-)

Moose now comes and barks at us when she needs to go outside- pretty proud of her!

Rhodach When they get to 10-12 months old they go on to adult and are free fed.

You free feed yours at adult? What breed and are you not worried about over eating and bloat, not knowing when
they ate to when you can exercise them safely?
Just asking cause these were some of the stuff I was warned about when free feeding.

With free feeding there isn't the inhaling of food that you can get when feeding at intervals, I also found when I had 3 that they didn't all want to eat at the same time so there was more messing about, even a 2 yr old I brought in got the hang of it very quickly.

I go by how the dachsies are looking and feeling and none of mine have ever gone over weight, it isn't unusual to hear someone crunching during the night, I never get anyone bringing up bile in the mornings which used to happen when on set feeds. The water bottles, 2 litres each are filled up at bed time and again in the morning, during the summer months more frequently.

The pups soon learn that this container had good things in it, one pup used to lie on her back in the dish at the bottom of the feeder and look up inside if it was nearly empty, never managed to get a pic of her though.

I have 3 adults at present, nearly 8 yr old male and 2 x 3yr olds, male and female, as of a week ago I have a 10 month old female who is on set meals till she settles in and has transferred over to what the others are eating and gets the hang of free feeding.

This regime may not work for all dog households or breeds but has been fine for the past 6 yrs for me.

I have always free fed my dogs- Wolf/rott, Shepherd/collie (R.I.P.) and the Boston's I have now.

Since getting this little girl Dane/Pitt was recommended to schedule feed her so guess that's what I am doing now lol
Plus have a lil boy coming some time in June or so and also schedule feed him. Def a learning experience for me- The
Boston's really don't seem to mind it- I offered them some food at her feeding times and they just not interested, so they will be
fed again at supper.
