I am lucky enough to own a five month old doberman bitch. She is my first experience with this breed but I have had dogs for many years and currently have a st bernard, german shepherd and two spaniels. But my doberman is without a doubt the daftest dog I have ever known. She just loves to jump up and deliver a massive kiss and take off on a mad five minutes around the garden. My other dogs just look on and I suspect think she's a bit mad:-) . I have literally spent months correcting her over it and she will only do it when she can catch me unawares. Secondly she will eat absolutely anything which is great but she hoovers down her dinner and I would like to slow her down eating if possible. other than that she is a lovely pleasant girl and so lazy once she gets in front of the fire. I have to hoist all 23kgs of her out for a pee last thing at night:-) . If anyone has any tips on how to stop the jumping and slower eating, I would be grateful. As for trying to teach sit, I would have better luck with my hens:-)

I think the jumping will generally resolve with age - esp, if you consistently turn your back and give her no reward (ie; not even a squeak from you).  She really is very young & I don't reckon you get that much payback from all your training until around 8 months.

In terms of speed of eating - why do you think it's a problem?  She's growing very fast and it's pretty natural for a dog (esp. in a multi-dog household) to eat quickly.  At this age I would expect her to be on 2 or possibly 3 meals a day - if she is on 2, then you might consider moving her back to 3 - she might be getting extremely hungry between meals.  Also a nice raw bone during the day will help with hunger pangs.  If she is choking with the speed she is eating you can buy special dishes with 'shapes' molded into them so the dog has to eat round them.  A couple of really big round stones in her dish will probably do a similar job.

In terms of teaching sit, I would get her to to it before she gets her meal.  She sits & waits, you put the food down & then release her onto it (easier said than done - but this is what you should work up to).  I would take her to a good puppy class - at 5 months she should know loads of things - like lie down, stay, sit, heel, come etc.   Going to class would also give you one-to-one time with her - as well as being a lot of fun.  Dobies are really smart & trainable - she just needs a bit of focus perhaps?

My husband had a dobie bitch & said it was the soppiest dog he ever had.  People with young children were scared of her - but he always said they needed to watch out more for his Jack Russell.

She is terribly soppy! She is still on three meals a day but she would happily eat ten. Got a lecture from the vet last week saying she was on the chubby side but I think she is perfect. She walks excellently on the lead and her recall is perfect so she does learn. I think the jumping is great fun for her and she will even leap over my german shepherd if she is going full speed. She is very gentle with all the others and the cats too. So all in all, she is just a daft lady who loves to jump:-) .
