Hi there , wondering if anyone has had a puppy with this .?
Its said not to be hereditary but the father of my pup had it ,is it sods law or could this be worth looking in to for research .
To be honest I'd never heard of it 'til a few months ago & have had dogs all my life .
Little fellow is doing ok now but still on steroids which are slowly being reduced .

Dogs who have suffered from puppy strangles( the other name is Juvenile something) should not be bred from as it affects their immune system and can be passed on, not all pups survive and those who do need expensive and possible long term treatment.

Only healthy dogs should be included in a breeding programme, enough unexpected things pop up without using a dog known to have had this problem.

At work we've recently treated a flatcoat puppy with this. He was very poorly at first - he was rushed in as an emergency at 3 weeks old, very 'flat', before the 'hippo' stage so it was difficult to know what was wrong with him. Once the lesions started to appear I (brownie points for me!) recognised what it was and the high steroid treatment began. He's now off steroids, been vaccinated and has gone to his new home at about 4 months of age.

It's not known if it's hereditary, but I wouldn't want to breed from a past sufferer.

Everything I ahve read suggests that a dog or bitch that has recovered from thsi shoudl not be bered from!  It is an immune system problem.
