Please could someone supply me with information. How do you go about registering an affix at the Kennel Club? I asked them for info and they sent me an application to export form instead!!! So, second time round fingers crossed!!
Without seeing the form (obviously!) how do I go about it? Do I have to fill in the form and list a number of desirable affixes and hope that one gets through? Or how else does it work?

Yep, thats about it 9th.
You will be asked to supply 3+ choices and then when the KC have checked that they are not already taken, they will print them in the Kennel Gazette and ask for objections. If no one objects, you get your first choice. You can purchase a complete book of all the registered affixes from the KC for about £5, which would save you time and open up your choices before you submit them. Take your time over your choices. If you get your second or third choice and then decide that you do not like it after all, it will cost you another £50 (?) to change it ! The other thing is that the process takes several months , so don't hold your breath

When I applied for mine earlier this year, I had to submit 6 choices of which only 1 was accepted. It then takes about 3 months. This costs £45 and £15 yearly (£12 if by direct debit).

Yes Freeway it is 6 choices and you have to say which breeds your interested in then they check them against existing affixs and inform you which ones or one in order they will let you have they then publish the first choice in the Kennel Club Gazette and anyone else who thinks it infringes on their affix has 30 days to object. If no objections your affix is granted and you get a certificate afew days after.I have just got mine Willosyam. I applied at beginning of April by the way.Gillian

Thanks everyone. I have just ordered the register of affixes from the Kennel Club. Heaven only knows whether I'll get that or something else!
I don't think I can think of six possible choices. If I don't get my first choice, then I shall scream (VERY LOUDLY). Do you think they will let me have "Towelhound"?

The clue is to get the same word with variations on the spelling. Just make sure that you are happy with what you select :-) If they do not have a TowelHound affix already listed then you might be lucky, but you never know with the KC do you.

"TowelHound" isn't my first choice, but you never know. It could come to that!

i was bored so i looked on the net for some possible affix names :)
Little Hollow
Beach Grove
Brookvale
Mayberry
Oakridge
Buttermere
Kalinder
Beechwood
Bichon
Mackay - my attempt at mixing your name into it lol
Maybe some of them have gone (sorry if anyone has them!!)
They sound like house names dont you think?

Thanks! I have one in mind, but I don't want to tempt fate by telling anyone what it is, until I've seen whether someone has it already.
I could use my house name, Morlich, which would be OK. Or my village name of Kildrummy, which would also be OK. Or I could go for a mix of Kate and Alasdair like Katal. Or maybe I should go for NinthMusketeer.
Again. Apols if anyone has any of the above names already. And if anyone has my preference already then look out. I'll send the hound round to gnaw on your towels.

remember when choosing an affix not to pick a long word as when you are registering puppies your affix counts in as the number of letters you can use, I think this is still 24 so if you have a long affix the choice of puppy names can be limited. its better if you choose a short name. I found that out as my affix has 9letters in it.

When I registered my affix with the KC I was told it must be one word and no more than 12 letters. They refused to let me use my affix that I had registered with the FCI (I lived abroad for many years), because it was two words. The affix I had abroad was protected all over the world........except in the UK. The affix with the UK Kennel Club is only protected in the UK. Anyone in the rest of the world can use your affix and register it abroad and there is nothing you can do about it.

If you go to the KC website you can download Forms, that might be a way to save time, and ensure you get the right one. One thing try to keep your affix short, and I think they only accept single words. When it comes to registerign puppies, their names cannot be over a certain length, this includes the affix. the longer the affix, the less scope you will have for individual puppy names. I think the name has to be under 23 or 26 letters long!

Just to warn you of a silly thing I did. I applied for our affix in our joint names. Completely forgot that our dog was only registered in my name. One year later, I try to register her litter and could not as in the K.C. eyes, the dog is owned by me but our affix is owned by me and my husband. I had to re-register our dog into both our names, and then I could register her litter. It didn't take long, but it could have been avoided.

I have just spoken to the KC about the mythical Directory of Affixes. Despite them having promised that I would have it three weeks ago, they are now saying that they are being printed this week and will be sent out over the next few weeks.
At this rate, by the time I get an affix, she'll be too old to have puppies!

glad to hear I'm not the only one getting the run around from the KC re Affix book was told by letter 6 wks ago that I would get it in 2 wks as they were being printed the next wk lol - wonder if the KC has a different time zoning to the rest of us - only took them 3 yrs to send me my breed record supplement for my first litter of puppies!
