Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / How long till pup stops mouthing

Our eighteen week Goldie pup continually mouths our hands,we try substituting with toys or a kong etc but this does not satisfy him for long and will soon return to mouthing us or our GSD.The older dog allows this for a while and then tells him off at which point he will return to us and start again. We tried ouching loudly this worked for a couple of weeks but not now, we now resort to time outs behind the dog gate( trying to ignore the pitiful face sqaushed against the bars ) I've rubbed his gums with bonjella as I realise his teeth must be hurting him,but would really like to be able to sit in the evening for a while with out the continual harassment. Also putting in the kitchen also has it's own risks as he now has discovered counter surfing, used the waste bin to climb onto unit pinched a bottle of blackcurrant juice and punctured the plastic bottle drenching himself and the kitchen in juice, he was a lovely shade of pink. Our GSD (aka Daddies little princess) was never as naughty or so my husband informs me. Selective memory or what.

My pup didn't really become gentle with her teeth until about 6 months, when she'd lost all the baby needles. Now she holds our hands very gently; a complete change from the manic crocodile she was as a baby!

Manic crocodile is such an apt description lol

I agree my flat coat was a good few months old before she stpped mouthing us but still hangs of my gsd ears and tail at 9 months. In your husbands defence I have said the same thing about my gsd lol think it must be a gundog thing she also likes to carry something a lot f the time

Try soaking your hands in dilute Dettol. The taste is a real deterrent but it only works when freshly done. I would keep special things for him and when he starts mouthing, distract him with a kitchen roll middle or an empty plastic bottle (cap removed.) There are plenty of other things you could use, such as a stuffed Kong. If it has been kept in the fridge, the coolness will be soothing for his gums.

Didn't think about putting his Kong in fridge, thanks will try that one and yes he loves empty toilet roll tubes as well as full ones and full plastic bottles of ribenna lol.Oh the joys of puppies !!!

Are sure it is chewing he wants as opposed to CARRYING? Many Goldens just cannot exist without having something to carry around most of the time. I've certainly known many trying to carry a person's arm. :)

agreed goldimali its a retriever thing lol

What I do at teething time is get 3 old tea towels, roll them up length ways, put 2 or 3 knots in each, wet with water wring out and pop in the freezer, when frozen give to pup, swap when no longer frozen, any water isn't going to cause any damage.

Tea towels in freezer, kong in fridge, going to pre armed for this evening, many thanks for all your comments that's what I love about this site always someone willing to help.
Bailey is definitely a retriever always has something in his mouth already, usually not his things mind you,he's teaching our seven yr old GSD bad habits they were having a tug of war with my bra that Bailey retrieved from washing basket this morning.

I usually think of it as a small piranha! :-D

Oh I totally understand the arm thing, the only problem I have is it's one of my Rottie girls. She's very soft mouthed, but I always suspected she has a bit of gun dog in her somewhere, her love of muddy puddles is another indicator I think.

Some dogs stay in the baby shark stage for much longer than we'd like!!

I too suggest wet frozen tea towels, a frozen Kong, and Nylabone chew/carry toys.  Lots of swaps, lots of choice and variety with different textures and sensations.  We kept a huge number of toys in a big bucket and our latest pup was allowed to choose a new one each time he seemed bored with the last - mind you he liked the bucket best of all and would zip about the house scooping up the unwary!  Tying his toys together with lengths of cord gave him hours of fun and the oldies just had to learn to "get off the freeway!"

I never found 'time out' worked very successfully but I'd put the wee monster on a lead, put him into a down stay and shove a toy in his chops (well not quite literally but I would often hold it for him).  He was frenzied when tired and he simply needed the opportunity to wind down a bit - he often fell asleep mid chew :)

The frozen teatowel worked wonders with my GSD. Whenever he was manically mouthing us then we would just give him that and he would sit and chew it for hours on end. His mouthing lessened for a good few hours afterwards as I think it really soothed his teeth. He only ever mouths when really excited now (Coming up to seven months) and even then it is very very gentle.

Our goldie pup was a complete nightmare with biting our hands and mouthing she had a full toy basket to try and distract her but to no avail our vet told us to growl deeply at her whilst stamping foot on floor, it certainly distracted her and she just stopped of her own accord thank god and she is so very soft mouthed and gentle but I never thought she'd be at her biting stage lol
