Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Raw Question for dogs required to have high energy levels
- By ClaireyS Date 08.01.12 22:59 UTC
I have fed raw for a long time now, as some of you know I compete in Cani-cross and bikejoring.  This year my Kelpie and I won the UK championship (his first year competing) and we also represented the UK in the European Championships.

I feed a good variety of meat, bones and offal, with eggs and fish once or twice a week. I just wonder if my working dogs could do with some carbs such as pasta or rice ? I feel he doesnt have as much energy as he should, but then wonder if im expecting too much of him (he does top speeds of 25mph and averages 15-18mph)

What are peoples opinions on adding carbs ?

Dogs get their Energy from fat not Carbs, what kind of meat do you feed atm?
This is hopefully a link to a really interesting article I pinched from another Forum. Well worth a read. I'm not good with links so if this doesn;t work let me know and I'll try again.
This is a short extract from it:
"Continued research showed that dogs actually have a very low requirement for carbohydrate and that; indeed, fat was the preferred fuel for endurance in the performing dog. The question often arises: If carbohydrates help people, why don't they help canine athletes? The reasons are complex and involve differences in gait, cardiovascular physiology and energy metabolism. Dogs and humans just have differences."

interesting, thank you.  They get lamb, hearts, lungs, tripe, beef, kidney, liver, chicken.  I assume lamb is quite fatty ?

Thanks Agilabs for such a fantastic article.  I'd been wondering about carbs & endurance in dogs - and now I know the answer.  I've also copied it to my breed's raw feeding site.

If you are particularly interested in performance dog nutrition I would suggest you read:
