Has anybody seen tinned pumpkin ( not pie filling) in any of the major supermarkets? I have been searching and haven't located any, we also have "continental" supermarkets round here but no joy.

Would be grateful to know if anyone knows where I can locate this.

Very VERY hard to get in the UK, and a bit of an 'arm & a leg' job if you do find it. Last time I saw it was in a branch of Waitrose in Hampshire about 9 years ago at around £2/can!

I am reliably informed that Butternut squash is an acceptable substitute, but being fresh and not canned you will need to cook & mash it yourself.

You'll be lucky to find it, especially at this time of the year. My sister in law got me some in oct 2010 from a major Waitrose store and I think sometimes they stock it, but only around Halloween/Thanksgiving. I know you CAN get it from Amazon, or could when I last looked, but it is Libby's, shipped from America so not exactly cheap. If it's for aiding digestion in dogs, you could try sweet potato instead, which is far easier to come by. My American friends put me onto it when I was complaining about the impossibility of getting pumpkin.

I find it so weird that although people in this country seem to love all things from the US, pumpkin as something to eat has never caught on. I can thoroughly recommend it in pie, soup and bread. I grow my own now as it makes getting it so much easier! Such a waste to just carve it up :-(

I buy a pumpkin in Oct and steam and freeze it in ice cube trays and give one cube at a time for diarrhoea in my dogs.

I too have been told butternut squash works the same buut not tried it.

No idea where you'd get tinned Pumpkin from. Can I ask what you need it for?

Seeing that this is a doggy forum, it occurs to me that you maybe need it to make delishious doggy delicacies for ... well, your doggies? If so, then boiled & mashed up butternut squash works just as well, and has the same 'digestive' benefits :-D

If not for your doggies, then boiled & mashed butternut squash would probably still work just as well. I just wish in the UK we could have pumpkins available for longer than just the Halloween period, I didn't have nearly enough to fill my freezer :-(

Thanks for all the replies, it is for digestion in the doggies.
Never knew about sweet potato or butternut squash!
I will also buy and freeze at Halloween- good thinking.

Thanks again :)

I guess it's possible, there must be some varieties of squash that are available all year round? Perhaps it's just not possible to get them to a good size with our climate. Courgettes are a type of "summer squash" but we eat them young, or larger ones become marrows.

I would think that in the USA they have such a variation of different climates, from arctic to areas in the South that rarely if ever see frost, they might be able to grown them year-round but the demand may be there - which it isn't here.

If you travel by train from Southampton toward Salisbury in late summer you will pass several fields all filled with big orange footballs! but the big orange ones I find are fairly tasteless.... I much prefer home-grown ones or squashes (same family).

Just remembered when I lived in London I could get pumpkin all year round from the ethnic food markets. The West Indian veg shops and stalls sold the grey skinned "Chinese" pumpkins, which are much better tasting than the orange ones. So maybe check out any ethnic food stores if you have any, or ethnic markets.

Have you checked out the stores in west croydon, norbury and the like. I know we also say pumpkin but all the squashes are related  so would any others do the same job oops just notice msT just said that :)
Or just thought surrey street market
Another thought the pumpkin farm in sussex http://doctorwatson.info/sussexforums/index.php?threads/oct-1-2011-slindon-pumpkins-slindon-arundel-west-sussex-bn18-0rp.2815/. They have soooo many at halloween wonder what they do after that

I want the supermarkets to keep selling the big pumpkins they buy in specially for Halloween, rather than after the day chucking them in the skip :-O They actually last for a very long time beyond Halloween :-) (given the chance!)

No ethnic markets in my local area :-( just mountains!!

For years when my 2 girls were young,I would throw away the pumpkins and contents. Then when I changed my dogs diet to BARF I didn't realise how much the dogs enjoyed their mashed up pumpkins. My brother grows few,but they are all gone by begining of November.Shame really.

- By Rhodach [gb] Date 08.01.12 04:52 UTC
