> I just wish in the UK we could have pumpkins available for longer than just the Halloween period
I guess it's possible, there must be some varieties of squash that are available all year round? Perhaps it's just not possible to get them to a good size with our climate. Courgettes are a type of "summer squash" but we eat them young, or larger ones become marrows.
I would think that in the USA they have such a variation of different climates, from arctic to areas in the South that rarely if ever see frost, they might be able to grown them year-round but the demand may be there - which it isn't here.
If you travel by train from Southampton toward Salisbury in late summer you will pass several fields all filled with big orange footballs! but the big orange ones I find are fairly tasteless.... I much prefer home-grown ones or squashes (same family).
Just remembered when I lived in London I
could get pumpkin all year round from the ethnic food markets. The West Indian veg shops and stalls sold the grey skinned "Chinese" pumpkins, which are much better tasting than the orange ones. So maybe check out any ethnic food stores if you have any, or ethnic markets.
