A friend had a litter 4 weeks old. One teat bad, others fine. Bad teat has actually ruptured and shes on abs. I said from the start keep Pups on he's said take them from her, this was before and after rupture. Stikk saying keep then of to prevent cross contamination. Blah blah. Keep them off or on??? Pups have started to be weaned.

It's a few years (9) since my bitch had this problem, my vet said it would be ok to let the pups continue to suckle, so unless things have changed I would still allow it.

Pups off asap IMO.
Fast weaning as the mother is probably passing a high concentration of antibiotics through the milk.
Plus with an open wound its unfair to have large scratchy pups clambering over her.
A teeshirt on mum and weaned pups means she can still enjoy them and they her.

Will he need to do any breast management to stop the good teats.from becoming congested and the same.happening to them. Or just bath the wound and leave her be?

I had similar last year and best advice from a very experienced breeder was to keep pups suckling. We covered the wound with a clean gauze and held it on while they were suckling to prevent them infecting it. It kept milk flowing and helped to soften the breast.

Our bitch then had 3 further teats harden but we felt them earlier and did gentle massage on the breast tissue of the four big ones with a warm flannel, every 30 minutes. This seemed to prevent it getting worse.

Good luck, it's very scary.

I had this, for the first time in October. Two teats out of action due to burst abscesses, pups were almost 2 weks old. I tore up a T shirt and put a bandana around Mum, covering the two teats every time she fed. She had 4 teats left and a litter of 10 but we managed with her feeding them outside the whelping bed four at a time with me rotating. I debrided the wounds with very dilute Hibiscrub squirted in a 10ml syringe once a day and the wounds healed beautifully. The bandana became known as her "maternity bra" !
