Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / difference between 'Live' & Probiotic Yogurt?
- By Kat and Co [gb] Date 14.12.11 21:20 UTC
Is there a difference between "live" and "Probiotic" yogurt...?

or are they the same , is probiotic yogurt live aswell ??

this is stupid but I was stumped at the ASDA tonight, one say's Live with nothing added, another doesnt say Live but say added probiotic things, totally cant say or spell but on the lines of accifullis & bacifudeum LOL LOL

The same, if it mentions actual bacillus then you have a live yoghurt.

Pleasure Jean LOL :-p

I thought it may have been the same, baffled by yogurt... well whatever it was a massive hit with the dogs, they loved it.... I wont have to spend 15 mins scratching my head in the chiller aisles now...

Very useful for sick dogs as well as healthy ones.

One of their meals per week is a yoghurt smoothie with an egg + banana + manuka honey.

If ill leave the egg out and add slippery elm or tree bark powder.

You get prebiotics, probiotics, gut soother, all in one.

I don't know if it is true, but I was once told that any yogurt that needs to be stored in the fridge is live.

No - would you store any yoghurt out of a fridge ?? :) They are dairy products, live or not, so have to be stored in a fridge (otherwise they will soon go off :) ).

Tohme - thanks for that, another useful recipe to add to my collection!

Is that so ? Well, to quote from Rainy Lanes web site , ' with the exception of UHT or long life yogurts, all yogurt is 'live'. Live means that the cultures are added after the milk has been heat treated to remove any bacteria.'
It then goes on to explain the difference between live and bio yogurt.
And, yes, I have seen UHT yogurts on the shelf next to the UHT milk.

I make my own yoghurt and have tried 'starting' it with a few 'natural' yoghurts (not UHT) and it just hasn't worked :)

That's the best test to discover if it's live; if you can 'breed' it then it is; if it doesn't work (and with most ordinary yoghurts it won't) then it isn't.

I always thought the only yoghurt the dogs can have is Goats?! I go thro loads of the st helens goat products! My pugs love it!

Ive given normal yoghurt before and it gives them the squits,,

I like that one too. Shame it's so expensive but you can always freeze it in dollops which doesn't seem to do it any harm.

It's the lactose levels in dairy problems that can be a problem for dogs, which is why goat's milk is preferrable to cow's. However, yoghurt made from cow's milk has quite low levels and cottage cheese even lower levels, so not normally a problem. But some dogs wont even tolerate low levels of lactose. :-)

My lot love dairy milk but it just goes through them so they have goat's milk, but they are fine with cow's yoghurt & cottage cheese - good of them as it's cheaper :-D

In actual fact if a dog (or human) has a problem with lactose it matters not the origin of the milk.

Lactose will also vary according to the time of year the animals are milked and of course, if you buy a commercial product it will be LOTS of goats/cows from different herds. There is less than 0.5% difference on average between the lactose content of cows v goats on a grm for grm basis.

Many dogs are intolerant of the milk protein (casein) but many dogs that cannot tolerate whole milk products can tolerate live yoghurt very wel.

Funny that, as if any of my 4 pugs have cows milk or cows yoghurt they cant tolerate it and have the runs for at least a day. They all have goats yoghurt for there supper and love it and no squits.
Im always a bit wary feeding them anything thats not goats just because of previosu experiance!!

Same with cheese, they can only stomach goats cheese!
