Topic Dog Boards / Health / clicking joints in 7month lurcher
- By LurcherOwner [gb] Date 01.12.11 11:15 UTC
my greyhound lurcher is 7months old and i have recently over the past 3 weeks or so heard very occasional clicking. It is usually as she goes to lie down (when she lies down she goes into a 'bow' position, stretches and then the bum goes down) but today i heard it as she was just walking. I have only heard it about 4 times but it has me worried as i no the health issues with a dog of her breed. Is it something to worry about at this young age or is it normal as it as only been a cople of times ???? My partner says it may be that she is not getting enough exercise but i really cant see that as being the case, could it be?? Or could it be to much exercise?? She does run VERY VERY fast for a pup of her age, i no the breed is a VERY fast runner but i have not even met a fully grown lurcher yet that can keep up with her (or maybe dose not try to keep up with her) she does like to run to the best of her ability when out in open space. Is this to much to young ???

I do not encourage her to run as she does but i do allow it, maybe a good idea to do road walks every day with her and a field run just a couple days a week???

Sounds as if it may be slipping patella either one or both knees.

Is that bad ?? Is it trip to the vets or is there things i can be doing at home to help or prevent??

Is that bad ??

Panic not, it may be nothing of the sort.

But if it is it depends on the size of the lurcher and the severity and cause of the problem it can however be fixed sometimes by doing nothing or if needed with a operation that is usually successful. Would be an idea to ask your vet to check knees and if they are ok the hips.

However it is possible to hear clicking and it be impossible to find anything wrong so don't panic just yet.

Could it possibly be that her nails have grown long and need trimming. They will make a clicking noise.

i had a dog who clicked (somewhere in his hindquarters - never did pinpoint it!)
He lived until he was 14 yrs + and never had a problem with lameness, arthritis etc.
Come to think of it - I've got a bone in my foot that clicks when I walk barefoot. Doesn't hurt but sounds awful & is really annoying!
