Me again........

Have had the nail thing, couple of weeks earlier we had a sickness thing - this I think was eating seaweed on beach - the hard bits that are attached to leafy bits? Anyway, not well at all, vomited some of said hard bits up but then seemed to drop weight and the vomiting continued.  Went to Vets (obvs), injection and two sets of tablets.

Thing is although i have upped her food she doesn't seem to be gaining weight - i can feel her backbone and ribs and now she is leaking wee.  She lays down and nods off as normal then when she moves there is a little puddle and it doesn't matter how many times she has been out so i know its not becuase she is trying to keep it in. Everything else is fine - drinking, eyes bright, tail wagging, no obvious anything else but i accept i am a pet owner not a vet :)

I am going back to the vets, of course, i just wondered if you lot had any ideas before i get there?

Thanks, again!

I wonder if she may have a urinary tract infection to be causing the incontinence. I suggest you take a sample with you to the vets.

Has she been neutered?

I've got a vague feeling that I read somewhere on here that drinking salt water can cause urinary problems? could the salty seaweed cause an issue?
What did the vet diagnose last time? What were the injections and pills?

Personally, I wouldn't be overly concerned if her weight was maintaining at this stage. It can take some time to regain lost weight (this doesn't seem to happen with me but does with my dogs!!). However, if she was continuing to lose weight then I would be somewhat concerned.

Definitely a sample of urine up to the vets with you. It may be something as simple as a urinary tract infection causing the leakage. Has her drinking increased at all? I always notice my bitches will drink more frequently with a UTI but not be intaking huge volumes of water. It can be quite subtle. What age is your dog? One of my younger bitches has spay incontinence where she dribbles small amounts of urine. Easily remedied with medication - for her, Incurin was effective where Propalin wasn't but there are definitely treatment options available :)

Hi all,

She is 8, Black Lab.

There was no 'diagnosis' as such just an assumption based on the info I gave them - eating seaweed!  Interesting if the salt water thing is correct though as in the summer she suffered from cystitis also - could that be caused by salt water too? or are they completely different?

I shall endeavour to obtain a sample (tips please ladel, baking tray, pot??) but no her intake hasn't changed.  Think I may keep her water seperate from the other one for now so I can monitor a little more closely across the weekend.

She has been spayed, after her first season, so would that not have happened before now?  Like I said, vets on Monday - 1st appt i could get so all will be resolved then I hope.  In the meantime thank you all again for taking the time to reply.

Sx

If you have a new, metal foil receptacle such as used for baking, they are easy to get underneath & then you can squeeze the corner into a funnel to transfer the urine to a sterile pot. Never easy though!

No not necessarily the lack of hormone will gradually take effect on the muscle control along with the ageing process so it may be connected to that but I would look for infection first, time for HRT if no other cause is found.
