Hi!

New to the forum and keeping dogs so excuse me if sounding ignorant here. I have recently purchased an aylestone old tyme bitch pup, 11 weeks old, jags up to date and seems very happy, eating fine, toileting and sleeping well. I have since tried to find out info on this breed ( I know, why didnt I do that before purchase) but its not that clear. Are these old tyme bulldogs or a different type of crossbreed. I do have paperwork and certificates with dam and sires names going back to great great grandparents but after searching tinternet I am not so sure if I have made a mistake. My partner and kids are so happy with her but I want some more info on this breed. Any comments welcome, good or bad.

Can't help I am sorry to say these are not recognised as breeds - so you have a puppy just enjoy it for its self.

Cheers for the reply Nova. She is the 1st puppy I have ever owned and is adorable. Just searching around these forums trying to get as much info as possible on the aylestone type of olde tyme.

Sorry I can't help, never heard of the dogs so guess it is some sort of cross breed however as I have said no reason why it should not give you years of pleasure, make sure you train it well from the start as you will not be sure what breeds of dog are in its background so good training and I am sure your dog will grow up to be delightful.

Yeah hope so, I have started out as I mean to go on so it should keep her in line. She looks like she has a bit staffy in her but not sure and not speaking through experience so only time will tell.

I don't know if there is a breed standard or which of the dogs on that site represents the best example because thay all looked different and if I hadn't read they were bulldogs then I wouldn't have thought they were one.

It looks like they pair 2 up and stand back and see what appears.

Well on that site they do look very much like Staffie crosses which I suppose is what they are so treat and train as if you have a Staffie cross and I don't think you will go far wrong.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 25.11.11 08:12 UTC
They all look like staffie/bulldog crosses, so I think Nova's advice is correct.
- By Nova Date 25.11.11 08:26 UTC
Think one or two look Boxer/Staffie so would guess there are more than two breeds used and as they breed away from the original crosses the dominant genes will come to the fore so who knows what any one pup will grow to look like, but they should be treated as if they are a combination of the best and worst traits and health risks of all the breeds used in the mix.

I know quite a few of these as they seem to be the breed of the moment up here.  And I'm very pleased to say, they seem to have a really silly, clownish nature.  Any I have met are full of nonsense and I'm talking older males meeting my boy.  Remind me of a bullmastiff nature.  My vet has one of these too that had been handed in for not being tough enough!!  Think the staffie brigade are moving on to this?

Thanks for all the replies folks, really helpful to have input from people in the know. Cheers

hi i have a male one old tyme , he is 10 now. were not many around when i got him .such a loving gentle dog but can a be a stubborn old goat ! have also got a 9 month old female such a sweetheart. very mellow and laid back temparement.  i would highly reccommend them , so gentle and good with kids . ive found a lot of snobbery on this site about them as they are a mix of different dogs. who cares. . i dont have any respect for the kennel club anyway. anyone who promotes the british bulldog that has been messed about with so much is cruel . mine are red and fawn. look like a british bulldog with longer legs and snout.  large head, chunky, and lots of wrinkle and long tail. they are a mix of british bulldog, bullmastiff, staffy and a little bit of pitbull in there somewhere. mine are both very chilled , dont bark much ,quite lazy, dont take much notice of other dogs but any whiff of trouble and they are very protective. people who know their dogs know what breed they are straight away when im out walking them, and kids know straight away they are bulldogs . people who dont know their dogs say they are a massive staffy which i have learnt to humour and just agree with them sometimes its easier than trying to explain than they are how bulldogs used to be before they were mucked up  !!

I wonder when you lasts looked at what the Kennel Club have been doing for several years with this breed . As it happens a short film has been posted today which features the Bulldog that I am sure you would find interesting.  Let us know what you think :)

and of course they have used bulldogs crossed with other breeds to produce your dogs.  the main problem is they are not doing anything about the health problems inherent in each breed and dogs with Wobblers have been produced.

They should also be heart testing and hip scoring (ditto purebred bulldogs).

None of the breeds being used has a particularly good records re longevity and hips based on US OFA info.

You can't criticise and do not better yourself simply by crossing breeds.

The traits in character you admire are from the bulldog you seem to despise.

they are a mix of british bulldog, bullmastiff, staffy and a little bit of pitbull in there somewhere.

So that instantly makes them illegal under the DDA then.

I don't think anyone here is snobbish about them because they are crosses, just concerned about the health and welfare of the dogs and people potentially being ripped off by unscrupulous breeders. A lot of people on here have a great deal of experience of breeding and dogs in general and can see the pitfalls a mile off.

At the end of the day you love your dogs and look after them, thats the important thing :-)

but breeding is about so much more, or should be.

they are a mix of british bulldog, bullmastiff, staffy and a little bit of pitbull in there somewhere.

So that instantly makes them illegal under the DDA then.

Only if they look like one. Looking at them they don't.
