Hi,everyone.I ll be having my year old Gwen spayed now she s had her first season, the vets said to book it for ten weeks after, now i know Im thick, but i take it this means ten weeks after the end of the season, not the beginning? And as that would take us very near christmas(she came in season on the 27th of september)does it matter to a few days?Just a bit concerned if something went wrong with the holidays due. Does anyone know if they would be likely to give her a sedative at the time of taking her in?my vets used to do this all the time and you could sit in the waiting room with your dog till it started to take effect, much kinder, and you felt better knowing your dog wasnt worried to death, but they stopped doing it,i intend to ask, anyway,as my Jess became very anti-vet after she was spayed-tries to bite and has to be muzzled-and id prefer it if it didnt happen to Gwen, too.thanks in advance!

The exact timing doesn't matter - ten weeks/three months after the start or end of the season, it really doesn't matter. What's important is that the bitch is back to normal after her season and showing no signs of phantom pregnancy - no lactation, for example.

I always count 12 weeks from the first day of a season.  Or in the case of a bitch that is being spayed after having a litter, I count 12 weeks from the day of whelping.  There isn't a great deal in it.  The idea is getting it done when hormones are not raging.

When I last had a bitch spayed my vet said to phone for an appointment as soon as her season had finished, and they would then book her in for 3 months later. They prefer to do it that way so THEY know for sure when she was last in season, and you don't forget.
