Am I right in saying the puppy is a surprise ? I presume your partner wants a dog as if you are both going to be responsible for the dog the surprise should be let's get a dog and then choose one together.

As for names I always find having the dog home amd getting used to it's personality is the best way of choosing the right name.

What is the pedigree name as that sometimes helps in choosing a name :-)

I always start with the registered name and work from that, sometimes it is impossible to find something but often you can find a calling name that fits in with his registered one. If he is only just 7 weeks that is a bit young and would perhaps be best to leave him another week in the nest.

yes we've been talkin bout puppies for a while now and we jus havent come across a puppy that u really see and say thats the one but my friend has gotten intouch with my partner to say theyve got a litter and i thought we was going to town on a normal wednesday but ended up where the puppies are and i got told sheniece its time to choose your new puppy so yes it was a suprise they shall be ready in 3 weeks time so which will make them 7/8 weeks just the same as the new puppy that came home with my mother but i jus wanted a few ideas to keep in mind

Sorry, bit confused now, who is your Mother, what breed is her puppy and do you live with her. Not at all sure if you have even seen this puppy or the parents I know your excited or may be it is me but I am confused.

I think the OP meant her partner was buying the puppy for her as an agreed surprise, thats how I read it anyway.

Spud ( this is what my boy is called )
Bazooka
Diesel ( very common name for them )
Flump
Fester ( as in Uncle Fester )
Skook

I always prefer friendly names for my SBT's, they get a bad rap already without giving them an intimidating name, you've no idea of the amount of people who go " awwww" when I tell them Spuds name, but then he is pretty adorable.

Have both the mother and father been fully health tested and have you seen the paperwork to back this up ?

There are so many staffies that are bred and many without health testing which can result in problems in later life for the puppies which could cost a lot of money for vets fees and treatment.

As I suggested before I think working from the pedigree name often helps as over the first few days the pup will settle in and you should start to see it's personality coming through :-)

Have the parents been eye tested clear and tested for L2 ? http://www.vetgen.com/canine-l2hga.html

The parents don't have to show any of the signs, just be carriers, and then you have a whole lot of heart ache on your hands.

The KC says that no pup should leave the breeder till it is at least 8 weeks old, even though the dam has stopped feeding them she and the litter mates help to teach them "good manners" which is a very important stage in their development.
- By Nova Date 16.11.11 14:57 UTC
The age a pup leaves its dam is to some extent dependent on the breed some are ok at 7 weeks but IMO a Staffie should be at least 8.

Glad to hear that the parents have been health tested but would ask to see the paperwork, I know it is difficult when there is a lovely looking pup you simply must have but you will have to care for it for at least another 14 years so it is best to be sure at this stage that everything that could be done to produce a healthy dog has been done. Sadly there are loads of poor quality Staffies born every week and the same sort of numbers make their way into rescue so making sure this is the right puppy for you and that it is well bred is important.

yes my partner was askin all those questions looking at paperworks and everything and plus because its a good friend of ours she is brillant with animals and likes things to be done right and things so i kno that everything she says and all the things we have seen are genuine and at least my partner can say she can see the paperwork so that all information is backed up etc

> I always prefer friendly names for my SBT's, they get a bad rap already without giving them an intimidating name,

I agree, not just for SBTs but any dog that can look intimdating, I think it's better off to have a more friendly/comical name :)

I love the name Spud :-D

I spent hours researching names before I got Buster. I was going to call him 'Blue' meaning 'Old faithfull' (dog names & meanins here), but it just didn't suit him. We re-named him Dino, didn't suit him, renamed him Deisel, didn't suit him, but one thing he kept getting called by everyone was buster, becasue he was such a 'buster' (as in large/robust). So, he was finally re-named Buster :) It suits him without being a 'macho' name.

Funniest names I came across were for a pair of male English Mastiffs, Oliver and Hardy !, suited them down to the ground, complete clowns :-).

Our first male was called Spud (love the name!!)
Our current male is called Obi (Star Wars)

Not SBT's but have never fallen out of love with their names.

Also like Trevor :)

I got the name Spud from a woman who lived in the same block of flats as my friend, she would poke her head out the window and bellow down to her old mongrel " Spud ! you stay away from that ice cream van ! " used to make me laugh every time I heard her.

Suppose you could go a bit more up-market and call it potato or really push the boat out and go for Pommes Frites

I was the same with my rott boy and didn't want him getting ideas above his station so called him Oberon after the king of the fairies.  Some of the names on the shortlist for him were teddy, leo, leon and elvis.  No Tyson's here.

I'm the same as LJS - dog comes home first, then I decide on the name if I'm going to change it (I get rescues, so they've already got names).

Only my boys were named before they arrived - Remy I did get as a pup, and I still changed his name twice lol! and my springer, Fletcher, who was Smudge before.  I still don't know why but his name just popped into my head on the way to pick him up and it was absolutely perfect, he was a total Jack the Lad.

Of my others, I've known I was going to change the name (Bella, Molly, Becky and Xena) because I just didn't like them but not what to until they arrived and then it took a fair bit of googling for Becky!  They are now River, Raine, Saffi and Paige.  I've had Raine in mind for a dog for years - it was going to be River's name - but it just wasn't quite right.  Then when Molly came home it suited her perfectly!
