Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Day 64 or 62 ( Am I worrying for nothing ? )

- By Cani1 [gb] Date 12.11.11 10:06 UTC
My bitch is on either day 64 or 62 and still no signs of whelping. I'm starting to worry a bit now as this is her second litter a repeat mating , she whelped on day 56 last time , so automatically thought she'd go early this time as well/
Now I'm a born worrier but can't help it , and am now thinking what if she doesn't have them this weekend will she be needing a c section on Monday . She is a utility breed that often need sections however I have always had mine of this breed self whelp. The pups are still moving around and there seems to be a lot more in there than the breed average of 2/3 . Last time she had 6 but we lost 2 , and another 2 were decomposing. This time she is huge her belly is very nearly on the floor.
So don't know what I'm asking exactly other than , do you think I'm worrying too early ? How long would you let her go before taking her to the vets ?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated .
- By tadog [gb] Date 12.11.11 10:14 UTC
was she mated only once? I feel if you are worried at all ring your vet. no point in saying later "I wish i had rung earlier". good luck
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 12.11.11 10:27 UTC
She was mated twice so she's either on day 64 or 62 , my vets won't book a section for any dog so I know they will say wait a while , thats why I'm worrying .
She is fine in herself just uncomfortable as she is so big , I'm wondering how long others would let their bitches go over.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 12.11.11 10:51 UTC
What is the norm in the breed/her lines? do they tend to go early on tiem or late?
- By SharonM Date 12.11.11 11:22 UTC
My girls normally whelp on days 62/63  my last litter were born on day 67/65  I must admit I did worry as I knew she was only carrying 2 pups, but they were born naturally, both healthy, but it did age me 10 years....lol.

She was booked in for a c-section at 9am on the Monday, she whelped at 1am and 3am that same morning, so guess she decided she didn't want a section!
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 12.11.11 11:59 UTC
They normally go a couple of days early , the thing is I think she is carrying more than a couple of pups , I haven't had her scanned but I think I can feel 6.
Guess if nothing by Monday morning I'll have a trip to the vets as that would be day 66/64 and I'll be out of my mind by then , I'm bad enough now :)
- By white lilly [gb] Date 12.11.11 12:19 UTC
id be the same as you :( going out my mind did you have her progestrone tested before she mated?? if not then maybe even if the second mating was a little early she might only be day 63 on monday ,fingers crossed for her and she has them tonight ,all the best plz keep us posted x
- By Chillington [pt] Date 12.11.11 12:42 UTC
She is a utility breed that often need sections however I have always had mine of this breed self whelp.

I would be worried, specially if she's very big, and you have no idea of how many to expect. Big litters can cause primary inertia.

If you are talking about the breed I think you are, I would also consider trying to find a vet that does elective c-sections.
- By cracar [gb] Date 12.11.11 12:56 UTC
Have you tried getting her up and about to get things moving?  One of my bitches was terribly lazy and would just lie about all day.  She went a couple of days over so I decided to get her out for a walk.  Not far nor fast but just moving in the fresh air.  Worked wonders and she went through the night.  (Not to say that she wouldn't have anyway but...).
If the usual old-wives tales haven't worked, I'm not sure I would let her go over a lot considering she was early the last time.
- By Rhodach [gb] Date 12.11.11 13:43 UTC
I too was thinking primary inertia even though managed. 6 the last time and having them early because the uterus couldn't  cope with any more stretching.

With each litter the abdo does look more saggy as the muscle tone isn't the same as before they ever had pups.

My gut would tell me to ring the vet and ask their advice and take it from there, if they fob you off and things don't go to plan then you can say you were following advice, make sure you get the persons name to keep if needs be.

Here's to a safe and healthy whelping.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 12.11.11 17:34 UTC
i forgot to say this in my last post "you know your dog better then any1 and if you have that gut feeling something is worrying you then ring the vet and get her in tell them its your money that is paying for this and you know your girl good luck xx

Any more news?
- By white lilly [gb] Date 12.11.11 21:00 UTC
ive just logged on to see if any news ,so hopfully she's busy with pups being born!! x
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 12.11.11 21:18 UTC
Well she has been panting on and off for a few hours but nothing major , no digging yet , she had a gush of water about an hour and a half ago , hubby has her out for a little walk to see if that'll help move things on a bit.

She isn't the main breed you would think in the utility that require sections.

Hoping this might be the start , if I am in doubt I will call the vets straight away , I can normally tell by their eyes if something isn't right , my last dog different breed that had pups was in trouble and I knew by her eyes , she ended up in the vets having a section within a short space of time.

Fingers crossed for you :)
If I remember when I bred cats, large litters do sometimes go a bit longer.... you'd expect the opposite really, but maybe it just takes more time for them all to get into position before birth.
- By JeanSW Date 12.11.11 23:48 UTC

>she had a gush of water about an hour and a half ago

I don't leave mine that long after I see the water.  How long are you intending to wait?
- By Rhodach [gb] Date 13.11.11 01:05 UTC
Mine go about 2hrs after the waters break before they start the serious pushing which lasts about 20-30 mins before the pup appears, then gaps run at 1-2 hours between pups, slightly longer when the second horn is getting ready.

Hope she gets down to the serious stuff.
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 13.11.11 08:42 UTC
Well the water must of been wee , my friend was here at the time and I was talking so I didn't see but heard the gush of water , ran outside with her and she had a wee , so it must of been that she can't hold onto it as she usually does , she has been drinking a lot the last couple of days .
After her little stroll she just came in and went to sleep , she has slept all night , wish I had :) I've been checking her at every different snore sound .
When she woke this morning she yelped wanting to be out for a wee and I wasn't going quick enough as she was yelping until I got the back door unlocked , she was desperate for a wee . The pups aren't moving as much this morning and she's content laying at my feet sleeping again so I've got a feeling things might start later.
Fingers crossed :)
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 13.11.11 11:00 UTC
Oooh sounds like tonight then if the pups gone quiet, I always say they go quiet the day before whelping.
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 13.11.11 12:35 UTC
Hope so , just had a slow wander around the block with her , she is hungry but won't eat , all she has wanted for days is dry bread , She has just been begging for some , I give her some and she is just messing with it , carrying it around and dropping it in  different places.
- By klb [gb] Date 13.11.11 14:55 UTC
Dont forget that serum progesterone can be used to establish if your bitch needs a c section ( establishing primary intertia) or for timing of elective sections. Progesterone of 1.5ng/ml - 2.0 ng /ml would indicate your girl should be in showing signs of labour, if not c section.
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 13.11.11 22:26 UTC
Thanks for that info I'll write it down if I need to go to the vets , can I please have everyone's views on how long they would let their bitch go over before a trip to the vets .

Still nothing happening other than she's squashing herself down the narrow gap on the outside of the whelping box and sleeping .She's either on day 65 or 63 , I'm thinking she has taken on the second tie.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 13.11.11 22:28 UTC
I would not let any of mine go over 63 days from second mating without checkign them out.  My breed rarely go over the 63 days.
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 13.11.11 22:35 UTC
Thank you , I'll be having a trip to the vets tomorrow then , unless we get some big changes overnight.
- By JeanSW Date 14.11.11 00:20 UTC
I have a breed that regularly only goes 56 days.  So day 63 I am almost having a seizure!

I would be at the vet on day 64 at the latest.
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 14.11.11 08:12 UTC
I'm going to call the vets when they open , this morning she is so uncomfortable and is squashing herself down the outside of the whelping box , she is also slightly shaking so I think this may be stage 1 starting , we have the odd pant here and there but nothing full blown yet.
- By cornishmals [gb] Date 14.11.11 09:20 UTC
Good luck. With my recent litter being born bang on time - even to the time of the first tie,I can imagine you are very worried.
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 14.11.11 11:26 UTC
Spoke to vets and going to take her for check up later if there is no change , but had to post an update that she has started digging :) whoo hoo , hope this is it , been waiting too long .
- By claire_41 [gb] Date 14.11.11 11:28 UTC
thats good to hear lets hope she's on her way then.
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 14.11.11 15:44 UTC
Well I'm going to see how she goes as she is digging a lot and really nesting now , I think we will have puppies tonight .

I have called the vets and told them she is progressing and they will be on stand by if I need them which is good :)
- By SLP [gb] Date 14.11.11 15:45 UTC
sounds like she's on her  way  good luck :)
- By JeanSW Date 14.11.11 22:46 UTC

- By Zebedee [gb] Date 15.11.11 00:27 UTC
Lets hope your absence on here is simply because you are far to busy and preoccupied with much more important matters!
Fingers crossed for you all!
- By Rhodach [gb] Date 15.11.11 03:32 UTC
I woke up so decided I would check to see if there is any news.

Hope things have got going and you can report back to us.
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 15.11.11 11:43 UTC
Puppies are here :)  six in total alive , one  died she was the last one born and the dopram didn't work , she had already gone bless her :(

Anyway I am happy to have the others all gorgeous 3 of each so a nice balance , dark and tiger brindle I think at the minute anyway.

First one born at 4.35 am this morning the last still born at 9.20 . All cleaned and feeding nicely but mum is almost sitting on them trying to feed , I can't take my eyes off them incase she squashes them , I know she's just being a good mum though and will calm down in a bit.

So relieved we didn't need the vets , although the last one was hard to get out we managed , so tired but won't be able to sleep.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 15.11.11 11:59 UTC

so sorry to read this r u sure this is it ? could she have anymore still? fingers crossed xx
- By Sawheaties [gb] Date 15.11.11 20:30 UTC
I think I'd be at the vet just to make sure, however I do admit to my boy being born 11 hours after his sisters as I thought she had finished, thankfully it all turned out ok.
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 15.11.11 20:31 UTC
Well she has been panting again slightly , it wouldn't surprise me if there was another small one in there , but then I know she panted on and off for a week with her first litter.
I'm keeping an extra close eye on her , bless her she's had a hard day . x
- By white lilly [gb] Date 15.11.11 20:33 UTC
sounds like u both have :( poor girl if she has another fingers crossed this 1s ok xx
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 15.11.11 20:33 UTC
If I'm in any doubt that there is a problem she'll be rushed to my vet she is too precious to me .
- By Esme [gb] Date 15.11.11 20:35 UTC
Hope you all have a peaceful night.
