Hi my bitch has just had a litter. She was well all through the pregnancy and everything seemed fine she had them on day 62. She had 10 in total but only 2 survived all the others were stillborn ?  Any ideas ? We had her scanned after the first 2 SB and we could see a couple of heartbeats she then had another SB followed after about 90 mins with 1 girl and 10 mins later 1 boy.  Then nothing for about 2 hours I couldnt feel anymore I spoke to the vet he said could he'd only seen 3 poss 4 on the scan so if she was ok in herself to assume all over with but we'd scan her in the morning.  She settled down in her box with the 2 pups suckling fine, she had some food and a wee and then a little sleep, 3 hours later no contractions just pop and another SB at which point we called the vet and went straight down he couldnt feel anymore but scanned her to see more and heartbeats so she had some oxytosin and came home all the others were again all SB ?   Is it because she never had the Herpes jab I toyed over?  I just don't understand why, we worked so hard on each pup but to no avail 2 of them were tiny compared to the rest and a bit mumified also.  It's so sad and upsetting for me and my girl.  All i can say is at least 2 survived I don't think she would of understood if none had.  She is a brilliant mum and the 2 surviving pups are thriving.  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Also I know it is probably the wrong time to consider with my emotions so high but when is the best time to spey her.  I know its half way between seasons but is that form her last season, her having the pups or when she stops bleeding?

So sorry to hear such a sad whelping story, may they rest in peace.

By what you are saying the pups had been dying for a while as some were smaller so it didn't happen during the labour, surprised the vet didn't suggest a  c/section when there were still heart beats after so many stillbirths.

To prove Herpes one or more pup would need testing.

Ideally the spay is done half way between seasons, my girl comes back into season when her pups are 17 weeks old so I would wait till 12 weeks after that season, ask your vet what he suggests.

Thank you I know it is very sad. I can't believe we lost so many its heartbreaking something i never want to go through again.   This is why I never had the Herpes jab as people say you ge more SB or not fully developed i.i cleff pallets etc.  Her last litter was so healthy:(  It is too late for me to have them tested now as ive already had them cremated.  I just wondered if it could of been anything else... Why did I not have the Jab!!

I tried talking to the vet regarding her being speyed but he wouldnt really answer me he just kept saying think hard dont rush into it.  Which I agree just wanted all the info so when the time is right I am prepared.

As far as C/S when he 1st scanned her i think he just said 1 of those things as nothing was a miss, if we hadn't of had the 2 live 1's so soon i think he would of suggested it at that point.   When we had the 2nd scan we could see 1 heartbeat and he said then we could opt for a C/S to ensure the pup comes out alive but my bitch was still ok in herself and i know it sounds awful but I wasnt prepared to lose my bitch on the table.  Its a decision I will have to live with knowing I could of saved the little 1,  But i keep telling myself i could of lost my girl
