Bella 11 month westie has suddenly decided she hates, hates, hates a 4x4 which drives around our estate as a security vehicle....she has never been close to it but just the noise of its engine will start her off .. when we unfortunately are out walking & it passes she is hysterical - i tried yesterday walking her up to it whilst it was stationary but she was very destressed, barking & lunging at it (im sure if she were loose she would chase it & im worried she would get injured or worse) - no other 4x4 has this effect on her - she came to us from Czech Republic, maybe transported in a similar vehicle? H E L P ?
Is it a diesel engine? More than likely is, and you'll probably find if you watch her that buses and other diesel engines do affect her just not as much as THAT car. Fireworks lately probably haven'y helped her cause either would very much doubt that any car she travelled in would bother her as it's too late really to use that as a factor. More likely it's a chase instinct that come to the fore and combine that with a fear phase which she's bang on for and lo and behold.....Car chaser!!
Personally I would avoid walking her up to the car and start using a hand touch command when she's not reacting and gradually walk her closer and closer to the car but do not let her react at any point as that's teaching her bad manners. Make sure you give her an outlet for her chase which is in there somewhere, she's a terrier you can't get away from it, and give her time to get through the fear phase. Probably in 2 weeks it will have gone,if not get a trainer out to her to prevent it getting worse.
yes its a diesel .. but i dont see her doing it with other vehicles (even our car is diesel 4x4 and she loves going in it) - how should i deal with her when she is running mad around the garden as it drives past? ignore/calm down or what ? or if we meet it in the road how should i deal with her....?
