As some of you may remember a puppy I bred had a reaction to his first injection and was very poorly. Whether it was connected or not we don't know but he then developed strangles. He has recovered really well and is now back to normal, having been on a reducing dose of steroids.
His owners have been advised to leave it another week and the start the course of vaccinations again using a different brand and are obviously quite concerned it may happen again. Any advice I can pass on please?
Anyone? Or anyones's experience of titre testing a puppy or nosodes would be welcome - thanks in advance.

Different country but a colleague at work had a litter of six small breed pups. She took them to the vet for their first vaccination and five of them died and the sixth just managed to recover. She contacted the vet who contacted the manufacturer. A representative of the company came to her home and asked permission to autopsy the pups. That was only last week. She hasnt heard back yet.

Personally, if that was my pup, I wouldn't re-vaccinated. I would titre first of all and see whether there is any antibodies at all and then possibly revaccinate at a much later stage if necessary. I would definitely also go down the route of nosodes though they don't prevent disease like vaccinations, they can deal with it quickly should the puppy contract anything.
I have suggested they speak to the vet again before vaccinating and discuss titre testing him. Also exploring the nosodes idea. It's such a worrying time for us all and how do you give advice in that situation?

If I owned the pup I wouldn't re-vaccinate, i'd be too concerned about another reaction and quite often when a person or animal reacts to something it can be a lot worse the second time.

I'm with Staff on this one the immune system is so little understood and a response like that is an indication in my world of an over reaction to a component of the vaccine, doesn't have to be the vaccine itself.
I can't have vaccines that have been produced using eggs due to an adverse reaction, but then I react to chemicals in tap water too.
Talk to the vet and find out all about previousvaccine and what it's in suspension with etc.had several dogs at vets flare/react badly and more often than not a change of vaccine stops it from happening again. We were admitted these dogs to the unit for obs though at time of vaccine for a good 8 hours to ensure we couldbe there for reactors.
You need to fully investigate the vaccine used and the use of nosodes.
