Hi all,
I'm attending a breed champ show tomorrow and have entered a dog pup and a bitch pup. The bitch is in puppy, novice and maiden. Dog in puppy alone as is already qualified. Ideally my husband would have shown the bitch and me the dog.
However.... the bitch is a complete nightmare for el husbando. The show does have a staggered start - bitches 10.00, dogs 10.30, but in the event that our two classes clash, should or can I pull the bitch out of her puppy class and leave her until I can show her myself in the novice and maiden?
TIA!

No you cannot withdraw from a breed class and continue to compete.
Your best bet is to ask someone to handle if there is a clash the dog that is easiest.

You should be able to tell the stewards of the problem and they will let you into the class after judging has started if need be. Or ask someone to take your dog after you have shown him to the judge.
thank you for the info. at least it gives us a head-up. Fingers crossed for the classes not clashing, ooo errr if they do!!!!

If it's breed champ show. I bet there would be at least one junior handler there who would take one of the pups in the ring for you and be glad of the chance too :)

I may have the wrong impression, but if you are hoping qualify your bitch puppy, neither novice or maiden are qualifying classes.
Sorry if you already realised this.

Is there a reason why your husband can't show the dog and you show the bitch?
How did you get on Saffronsmith?
Hi all,
it was really touch and go! the two classes exactly clashed, but there were lots of bitches in her class, so the husband and dawg stood at the endof the line up, and by good fortune I had finished my class just as Evie was about to be put on the table - her worst bit and I took over. She behaved extremely well - funny how they can surprise you.
Neither dog came anywhere. I'm feeling a bit downhearted today - is this normal?

I thought the dog had a better chance of a place as he has been placed in his past two shows and he shows best for me - how wrong can you be! still at least the husband doesn't take the blame on this occasion :-)

thank you for this! I discovered it at the show - what a steep learning curve this show thing is!!! Just out of interest, do 1sts in novice and maiden qualify for JW points?

Yes as long as 3 in the class :)
RE: you feeling bit downhearted - the Ups and downs with dog showing - you win some you lose some - just try and enjoy your day with your dogs - you have taken the best dogs home :)
I try and go without any expections that way I'm never disappointed :) and as long as my dog is happy in the ring I really don't mind where we come :) and I know I take the best dogs home :)
thanks Rachelsetters!
I've bred my pups from my own dogs with a mix of lines in their make-up so I am going it alone in the showring - I amost wish I'd used a well known stud dog so as to have the support from a large kennels. I'm not quite sure how to evaluate their success or current lack of!! but perhaps this is normal???

So hard when you have bred yourself I think - probably put more pressure on yourself :)
I didn't know anyone in my breed and my breeder lived too far away to support us at shows - but the people in my breed are lovely and welcome newcomers and I have made so many friends now :)
Hopefully you will start to make some good friends too.
Judges like different things I guess (not knowing your breed) and some days we all have good days and others less good - try not to over worry about these things - that judge on that day liked other dogs more than yours it doesn't mean they aren't good enough to be in the ring - as you have done well previously :)
Do you go to ringcraft - is there someone with your breed who could help you and that you trust?

Surely the breeders of the parents would be interested to see how their lines have progressed???
I certainly have a great interest in the puppies bred on from dogs I have bred.
Hi both,
I do go to ringcraft and have some very nice friends, but i don't think this is particularly reflected at shows where I really feel like a total outsider, and I have shown before - my old two were very poor, and I made more friends then.
re. their parents breeders - the two parents have only one side each that is an established line - they were both the result of hobby breeders who don't show, so even if they were interested they wouldn't have much advice to offer, which is why I'm picking the collective brains of champdogs so much!!!
My breed is very competitive, but I don't think I am! Suddenly the Knitting Club is looking a lot more inviting!! lol

I would make the effort to contact the breeders of the sides of the pedigree that are in the showring.
You would be surprised how helpful people are prepared to be when genuine interest is shown.
Before I started showing my first bitch of my current breed, I contacted the owner of the sire of my bitch, as well as the breeders further back for information and photos.
The first along with my bitches breeder became my main mentors within the breed. It is you though that needs to make the move.

I would say don't go to the shows with the hope of doing well......those days usually end the worst!!
In my experience the days when I've really not hoped for a peanut with either of my dogs, both have won their classes & one's gone on to win the CC.......twice thats happened and on other occasions one has taken the RCC!
I had no hopes for Crufts, was just really pleased to be there.............one won Yearling & the other won Limit!
The more you are at shows the more people will speak to you & also don't be afraid to chat to them, that was my problem, too shy! I'm not part of any camp but I do know everyone & they know me and I like it that way.
Best of luck for your next one :)
