Hi all I wasn't expecting to be asking so soon. My bitch is on day 57 and have been sleeping down here with her, she's been restless digging a bit and panting a lot all night!! Iv been awake but asleep (if you know what I mean) I am down here with her. She just woke me up for toilet which she didn't have but on her vet bed I have put down lots of paper, she had a rather large wet patch. It was not anywhere near big enough for a wee size patch, and there was nothing to make me think it was bile but (please excuse this) I had a good sniff and I smelt of nothing at all!! Could it have been bile or could it have been some of her waters broken?? Iv got book of the bitch and can't find it in there at all?

She's now decided to take herself to a cooler area and fall fast asleep. Im wondering now it probably wasn't her waters as her back end isn't wet, not anymore than it was earlier. I do think it was bile but am keeping a very close watch on her more than ever now, and the coffee is on and so is the heat pad!

If it was bile it would be yellow in colour, her waters breaking is a dark colour, it sounds like she may have had a wee due to pressure of the uterus on the bladder.
Just keep a close eye on her as she may be in the very early stages of labour which can go on for days as the pups move down ready to come out.

Thank you. She has been urinating on the lino in her whelp room occasionally when desperate but it's been very large and this was not so large. But it didn't smell which is why I thought it was probably not wee. But she went on to have a tin of chopped tomato and tin of pilchards 1/2lb of mince and 1/2lb of tripe! She was fussing about eating it though as if she didn't want to but would for the sake of it being there. She has stored the rest in her bed area and is now laying next to me quietly panting. She's not leaving my side which is different to how she has been, she's been quite independent during the pregnancy.
When she looks at me she looks so tired and has pinky white's in her eyes. Her temperature hasn't dropped if anything it's gone up but Iv been told it's not always reliable. I will be phoning my vets about the eyes although she seems quite happy, just tired. I know my eyes aren't sparkling when Iv been up all night! Just to be on the safe side and will tell them to be on stand by for today/tonight. Thank you for the reply :)

My goodness what are you feeding, surprised she has room for all that food and pups.
I've never found temp taking to be very helpful but others swear by it.
Here's to a safe and healthy whelping when she finally gets down to business.

They do look tired when they have inertia. I'm not trying to scare you, but it's very important that you keep it in mind.

Thank you Rodach and Jean, I have researched and researched about everything that could go wrong also, I like to make myself fully aware of all possibilities good and bad. I have been browsing posts on here for goodness knows how long and value all advice and opinions. Also congratulations on the safe arrival of your pups and a belated Happy Birthday :)
She has been scrounging for my ham sandwich and been toilet, although was a normal stool. (sorry I know its lunchtime) She's quite happy in herself wagging her tail if I speak to her, and now she is asleep.
She is fed on raw but in the last week it says to limit whole bones replace with muscle meat, offal and veg. Well she likes her tomatoes :P weird dog, and she loves her fish, it's what Iv been using to give her panacur.
She had a litter 2 years ago now, and I remember being so sure everything was all systems go on her 63rd day as she was going for the digging in her bed panting etc until 5am then curled up and went to sleep, the same thing happened the next night but she did produce on her 64th day. But being 2 years ago I seem to have almost forgotten what to expect despite reading everything I can find and refering to book of the bitch every hour. I have my mentor of the same breed and the vet to call 24/7 if need be, and of course this forum now.
Oh and she does eat for england, she didn't lose her appetite at all last pregnancy I remember that, she started to get a bit fussy these past couple of days. Still taking her temperature just in case, all the while she is happy for me to do so I will and it's 38.0

Thanks Tina, thats made me feel better. She is still pottering about, only sometimes visiting the whelping area but prefers the cold stone floor of the kitchen, she's had half her dinner and now having another sleep. Re read bob and has put my mind at rest a little more too, scanned it previously missing most of the information, doh! Im leaving Hubby on duty for a few hours while I have a kip, 3 hours broken sleep last night just isn't enough!

Well she slept all night long, aside from a little wee in the whelp room. Woke up bright and happy, hungry but fussy about what I have offered her. She is hanging around the leads wanting to go for a walk, everytime I get up she shoots to the door. I was thinking of taking her for a slow walk up the road and back, about 5 minutes. Good idea?? Puppies are happily partying away this morning, she's not panting or digging and is really quite happy in herself.

Ive had pups born at day 57 with no problems at all, ive used taking temperature for over 25 years and its never failed to drop and the bitch start within 24 hours, i prefer the old fashioned mercury ones and i take morn, afternoon and evening, good luck x

I personally wouldnt take her out for risk of picking up something, mine usually like a car ride just as a change rather than a walk

Thats why I was apprehensive. I normally take her out in the car when she's in season, great idea thank you :)

Sorry didn't see the temperature message. Have taken hers just now and it's lowest it's been so far, 37.5. It was 38.0 all day yesterday and the lowest previously was 37.7 so not exactly what I would call a drop but will check again in a few hours. Im using rectal thermometer which came with a whelping package kit.

I would expect it to drop down to at least 36, just keep taking it will drop then start to rise again as early whelping starts.

Seems kennel cough is rife in some areas and a lot of tummy bugs, take her for a ride in the car im sure she will enjoy, i actually take bitches out in the car for a quick ride that seem to be slow at pushing a first pup out most of the time a pups born in the car just seems to have the desired effect.

Well off out to get a new thermometer, it broke while temperature taking :-/ poor girl! She's had a restful day, just laying pretty much all day! She does look a sorry sight so our friend is going to come see her today for a while, she absolutely adores him and if she could go home with him Iv no doubt she would :( thought we'd get him to come round cheer her up a bit. She is eating but so so fussy. Trying to give her the Panacur is a nightmare! I have tried it with egg, cheese, milk, meat, even tried it with my bran flakes but she's not interested when the panacur is in it. Any suggestions? Going to get some tinned fish tonight to see if this will work. The babies are moving around quite a bit today, not so much kicking but moving, if you know what I mean? And her tummy feels really lumpy, is that quite normal? I dont' remember it from last time, I would quite like it if she could hang on to them until at least Monday now which is her due date, but we can all wish ahy. Sorry for all the questions but you all seem to know quite a bit having had a fair few litters before. Thank you

>Trying to give her the Panacur is a nightmare
Like you, I prefer to give it in food, but have to get it down them somehow. If they won't eat, I don't give them a choice. They get it syringed down their throats.

I think I may have to today Jean, she only had a small bit of it yesterday and I don't want the pups to end up with worms, not nice for them, so will give her a few choices today, if not I have to get it in there somehow. Shame really as she's quite happy to eat her dinner, as long as there is no panacur. Oh and she perked right up when she saw our friend, was soooo cute to see her so happy again! :)
I did the same thing with my bitch; held by the beard, waited till she opened her mouth, pow pow pow! She wouldn't have it any other way, no way, no how.

This morning, day 60, she was being her usual self nothing out of the ordinary, then around 10.30 - 11.00 she was digging in the garden trying to squeeze into this teeny hole she had dug, was very funny to see, she's had loose stools, and as she's happy for me to take temperature I have been, this morning 37.3 then just now 37.1 both lowest it had been so far! Normal temp has been 37.7-38.0.
She is digging in her whelp bed, panting and the occasional whimper which is not that uncommon for her tbh, she is also laying down but with her back end slightly raised looking uncomfrtable with it! She had her breakfast but is now refusing everything sooo could be tonight/tomorrow Im guessing :D
Have got the heat pad on, vet on standby (again), kettle boiled and everything to hand ready and waiting! Wish us luck :)
Do I still give her the panacur by syringe today? Or is she likely to bring it straight back up?
Just check that a puppy isn't trying to present if her back end is raised. Otherwise sounds like she's on her way.
I'd leave the panucur if you're unsure of giving it her, it won't hurt. Consider if she's be distressed if you do. xx
Good luck! My bitch was similar, and she really arched her back a little with each contraction too. xx

Dont let her out again unless on lead. She may shimmy into a space you cant get to and deliver there...good luck.

I have secured my garden and taking her out there on lead now. We are letting her use our sons part of the garden as its just grass.
Saying that she is quite content inside now, had a wee in the whelping room and tried to clear it up herself. Fresh new paper again, I only have 150 newspapers left now, lol!

No puppies yet, still waiting, she decided to get herself comfortable and sleep all night, on the sofa. Pretty sure thats where she wants to have them. So long as she's comfortable I don't mind, we need a new suite anyway, perfect excuse!

One of mine had hers on the sofa and it had to go to the tip , hubby wasn't too impressed as the suite cost us £4595 , never mind I wanted a new one anyway.
The same bitch is on day 57 today , she went a week early last time so I'm on hot bricks at the minute as well , she is not having puppies on the sofa this time I'm planning the whelping in my giant breeds whelping box .
Good luck I'm sure they will be here soon :)

Cani, how is your dog doing? Any pups yet? I updated on Day 55 and waiting for another litter from Cb. We had 4 girls and 2 boys :)

Congratulations on your new arrivals , 6 is a nice size litter .
My girl is fine , thought she was starting on Saturday evening as she started panting , but that stopped after a few hours , no digging yet so don't think it will be today . She's been off her food for a few days now and losing a lot of mucus . I'm predicting Wednesday , poor thing her tum is nearly bursting now she is huge.
Congratulations marieb on the arrival of your puppies. Did you have any problems or was it an easy birth?
Sorry, just seen your updates
