I have a male who was given the suprelorin implant. All ok, it wore off, we repeated it as I could not decide if I wanted to neuter him or not. Wasn't convinced the new one worked, but after 3, maybe 4 weeks, I decided to neuter him.
My girl came into season around the same time he was neutered. They were kept apart until a relative ran them together about 2 weeks into her season .. (the excuse was as my boy was neutered they thought it was fine, and they wanted to be together.. Words have been had) From what I can work out, they were together for a couple of hours. I have zero idea if she was mated or not, and decided to presume she hadn't (thinking implant + neuter = tiny chance). I also didn't get her mis-mate jabbed as I decided the potential side effects v the risk she was preg were not worth it
We are now about 6 weeks post incident, and I can't decide if my girl is having a phantom (like she did last season) or if I need to start panicking and preparing. She has had a few mopey days, picked on and off with her dinner a couple of days but otherwise has seemed totally normal. Tonight she can't and won't settle, and is generally driving me insane. Do I get her scanned/blood tested/xrayed or not?
I think this is probably a stupid post but I can't decide what to do :( Is there any "def preg" or "def phantom" signs to look for?

If it were me, I'd ring a scanner and see what they say. They probably wouldn't be able to give you numbers at this stage but would advise if it was worth you seeing her. Can give you the number of my scanner who will give you honest advice over the phone. She does it for a living and is also a breeder herself. Hope everything works out okay for you all.
Does she look bigger in anyway? Do your breed even present any other symptoms of pregnancy? Doyou have any idea long a neutered dog is fertile for post op?maybe a chat withyour vet? I know rabbits are still fertile 6 weeks later, going through my vet nursing books now and can't find a reference to it anywhere!! How vey odd!plenty about bitches though!! Not helpful!
I bet Brainless knows!! Or mastifflover!!

If I have got this right, the first Suprelorin implant wore off? (How did you know that?) If that is the case, and he had only had the next one for 3 to 4 weeks when neutered, then yes he could be fertile because the Suprelorin takes around 6 weeks to work, and you can definitely have viable sperm a couple of weeks after castration, so the risk is there even if it isn't huge. For future reference, the Alizin injection is very safe, much safer than the old style misalliance injections, so there is no need to worry about having that done on a bitch that has been mismated. If I was you now I'd have a scan done as you wouldn't necessarily see a lot of signs at 6 weeks. Best to play safe.

Not sure if it was Sam but there was a Post some years ago where a bitch became pregnant ant th only possible candidate was a male who had been castrated something like 9 MONTHS earlier.
There again I may have dreamt it?
I agree at this stage a scan or x-ray would confirm if there is a pregnancy
I am only presuming it ran out as it was given over a year before, his testicles returned to almost normal size again and his behavior nosedived (he started bitching,
marking and generally having a second teenager stage)
She doesn't seem to be any bigger.
> I know rabbits are still fertile 6 weeks later
Not just rabbits, 6 weeks is recommended in most small animals including rats, post-castration. It's not to do with the species; it's a general rule about how long viable sperm can stay available in the tubes in any male mammal, though the 6 weeks is probably the upper limit.

My OH had to 'check' 6 weeks post-op lol!! Is is not the same?!?!haha
I've heard about a bitch caught from a neutered boy 6 months after the op. I'm sure that breeder got DNA to prove he was the dad as it was so shocking.
My bitch recently had a phantom and I couldn't tell the difference between the phantom and the time she was in whelp. She even got a preggy belly!. Defo not pregnant though as I was 100% sure and no pups came out anyway lol. It's very hard to tell if it is or not. I would get her scanned asap.

I suppose as the dog doesn't get the opportunity to 'check' and clear anything stored up (unless he's a toy humper who goes all the way) it might just stay viable for longer.
Would you recommend a scan or xray at this point in time? Really hoping its a false :(

Crikey! In wales it's at least 3 MONTHS and up to 6 MONTHS
We're made of Stern Stuff here :p
ROLFL
When our dog was castrated (looong time ago) we were told that he would be 'safe' after 6 months
Personally I'd get her scanned ;)

He got his FIRST check at 6 weeks and another 2 after that. It wasn't until 6 months that he got the all-clear but with a stern warning from the doc that it's not 100% as the tubes can re-attach. Aaaaaaaaaaaaa!!
My aunts sister(on the other side) has just had a baby with a man that had the snip 14 years ago. They are now sueing the NHS?! so have had to have DNA which proved it was his baby. Think I'll just abstain lol.
Forgot to update this :)
Vet has checked my girl, she's having a false thankfully!
thats good news for you then :) xx

Excellent news. Hope he's right - someone else recently got a big surprise!
